Children LOVE the trick misers dream when coins appear in a bucket.
A new version of misers dream is Clonk 3 by Roman Garcia and Martin Andersen: A spectator holds the cup over his head and the magician or another spectator throws an invisible coin in the cup and the coin appears in the cup, the coin can be heard by everyone and feeled by the person holding the cup. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndFg23-FyoQ price: several hundred dollars/euro Has anyone any experience with this new trick in front of children? Do they love this special feature? |

For THIS, you would pay "several" hundred dollars???
THREE COINS? I use a kitchen canister or "caddy" that housewives use for odd small gadgets, and a handful of silver dollars, plus a bit of SHOWMANSHIP! Oh! I do "add" 5 to 20 boys and girls of elementary school age. IT'S A C O I N TRICK, N O T A BUCKET TRICK! This has been my show closer (for the young kids) for almost 50 years. It's so strong, I can't follow it. Several HUNDRED dollars!!!!! Ha! For $50. you can buy my book which has the routine spelled out in detail. On my dvd, you can SEE those kids laughing, and, the audience LAUGHING for five minutes.

OH! I bought the canister for LESS THAN ONE DOLLAR in a thrift shop! (It's NOT gimmicked.)

I guess David Copperfield would pay 20.000 for the bucket if the bucket would make his show better.
But yes an ungimicked cup and some coins are enough for this great trick, no doubt about that. |

David Copperfield is not only a good magician, he is also a GOOD businessman!
I seriously doubt that he would spend 20,000 for a pail, when he could buy a "Charlie Miller" for $50! KISMIF!!!

I guess the thought behind this bucket is that the bucket is completely isolated and you can still hear the coin apparently land in it. Maybe this could be built into something in an adult show (although I'm not sure about that), but I don't think it makes the slightest difference in a kid's show. I don't think kids care whether the magician does the sleight of hand version where the magician holds an ungimmicked bucket (with a coin secretly finger palmed and pressed against the inside of the bucket), and releases the coin when a kid throws an invisible coin into the bucket, and this version. To kids, it's exactly the same effect, but the sleight of hand handling costs nothing.

Exactly Noland!
The only "mechanical" props that I have are a couple of reels, I've used a reel(s) since 1947, and have never had one break or malfunction at a show, but, I have a sleight of hand method that can "save the day", if it ever happens! The only other props that can "break" are my breakaway wand, and fan! As long as my two hands "work", I can do the act!!! I don't understand why some people would want to "complicate" things! From what I hear, as you have said, "It's exactly the same effect, but the sleight of hand handling costs nothing." My pail cost me $.89 in a thrift shop, and, it's not going to wear out! Al Flosso, and I were very good friends! If I were to buy this clonk thing, Al would turn over in his grave!

Looking at the video, it is too easy to conclude that the magic is in the bucket. The bucket becomes the center of attention and I'm sure the kids are thinking, that is a cool bucket -- I dould do this trick if I had the bucket.
I use one of two rotuines. The first is David Regal's "Clink." The spectator tosses an invisible coin (which I vanished and handed to them) in the air and it visibily and audibly lands in a clear glass. The coin is removed from the glass and the effect can be repeated and there is always one kid who misses the glass with the invisible coin. Even thosugh I know the method, it actually fools me when I do it. The second is a traditional routine. I use a brushed stainless steel ice bucket and the new dollar coins. The bucket did cost a little more that Dick's thrift shop find, but my wife can use mine to keep a bottle of white wine cold when we have guests over for dinner.

I agree with RealityOne. The one advantage of "Clonk" is negated by it looking like the bucket is magic, not you.

Two more votes AGAINST THE CLUNK PAIL!
I "usta" laugh at the catalog description of the "MD"...."Magician shows a bucket empty, and, then, proceeds to produce coins, and toss them into the bucket" WHY show the bucket empty? Show your hands empty! I'm available as a guest, David! ("brut", s'il vous plait!) I started with an empty coffee can, and two "Tarbell (safety pin) droppers" when I was 15, and, working in a carnival side show, in 1946. The "Green River Whiskey half dollar size "tokens" (available free from Green River!) worked very well. I went through a period, in my late teens and very early '20s, when I was trying to be "swayve & deboner" (I wasn't!) using a champagne glass, and, the Down's palm (both hands!) It was "classy", but, the act was a "look how clever I am" act. I've used a half dozen different buckets even a 3 gallon water pail at an impromptu performance at the National Boy Scout Jamboree, but, they've always been plain & ungaffed. At the Jamboree, I used what loose change I had in my pocket, including an IKE dollar, a "SUDBURY big penny, and some quarters! Some guy named T.Nelson Downs, claimed that, "...the ENTERTAINMENT" is in producing coins from a little boy's nose, and, a little girls hair..." --Downs was right!!! Vous avez raison! (du hast recht!) "KC"! It's a coin trick, not a pail trick! We NEED the bucket to create the aural illusion, otherwise, it's played "under"!!

I got Clonk in my show & it rocks! I performed it in an adult & recently in a kids show and it got awesome reactions! the trick is VERY well made, easy to use, and easy to program! then let's not forget, you can use different coins as well! I use silver dollars and the coins make one heck of a racket when they fall into the bucket!Properly routined, Clonk will get you some of the best reactions you can get!

All of those "containers" were VERY well made, easy to use, and required NO "PROGRAM". I've used various coins, too! Green River Whiskeys, half dollars, IKEs, and, I think I mentioned above, a handful of pocket change. In the regular show, I use five IKEs, and they make "one heck of a racket", too. My routine CLOSES THE SHOW. I CANNOT FOLLOW IT! I've worked regional and national magic conventions, with my 89 cent bucket. I made a LIVING with it for YEARS. (I've used the MD since 1946 in about 20,000 shows.) Oh! It requires three seconds to reset my MD. If you need to spend several hundred dollars for a "trick pail", to "rock" an audience, that's OK. I would rather spend that money, on a couple steak & lobster dinners!

Oh, by the way! You said in your post that the "...trick is VERY well made..." NO! The BUCKET may be VERY well made! The bucket is a PROP, that one uses to PERFORM a TRICK! The bucket is NOT a TRICK.

I saw this gimmick at Blackpool. I have to admit, it's really clever. It's a small piece of apparatus that you palm in and out of the bucket. Combined with sleight of hand, it could add a really nice moment in a MD routine. At least that's how I imagined it being used-as opposed to being the routine, itself. Whether that moment is worth $300, depends on your budget.

The bucket's only purpose is to create the aural illusion. The MD is a COIN TRICK. The ENTERTAINMENT (according to a guy named DOWNS) is is the production of COINS from the kids' ears, noses, etc.
In my mind, this "clonk" gimmick is a "toy" for magicians. A $300. toy.

I realize that I'm regarded by a few, as an "old curmudgeon" (sp?) but, I "came up", mentored by several old professionals, who had made their own props as youngsters, in the late '20s, and early '30s. (The DEPRESSION DAYS) There weren't any "masked magicians", then, and internet magic shops didn't exist either! They helped me to learn, and I learned, the real secrets of magic. They were well qualified to help me learn the craft. (Nemo dat quod non habet! --No one can give what he does not have!)x Now, we have a generation, too many of which, "play" at being magicians! They think that they can BUY TRICKS. SO! enterprising salesmen, are happy to "invent" and "sell" "magic" to them. I believe that gimmicks ("clonk" is a very good example, although there are many more examples!)are made as "something to sell" to klutzes who print business cards with "professional magician, specializing in corporate events", etc. Fortunately, there are still some who haven't forgotten how to READ, and, who are willing to invest the time and effort, to study, practice, and learn. I am thrilled to be currently mentoring a young man who, understands! He is studying Tarbell, Maskelynne & Devant, Fitzkee, et al. He has devoured "Maximum Entertainment". He is learning to perform MAGIC with his own hands + generic props like rope, cards, coins, silks, etc. Last spring he won a scholarship awarded by the Columbus, Ohio, "Magi-Fest". He has just been awarded a $1600 scholarship to attend the Tannen Magic Camp. He is just beginning to book paid dates. He is 16. I am proud of him. I believe that he is going to be a MAGICIAN, not a guy who does some tricks with "magician's toys.
