Ian?
This is the debate I would love to hear so would a number of people. Two excellent minds in mentalism on two sides of cold reading. Neither one is a slouch in the business.

The information by both of you sharing could be made into a book itself.

I don't see the debate between Ian's position of not needing to learn a real system and any other position that claims that you do need to learn one, as being the real question.

If your goal is to learn cold reading, then you should study that subject and Ian's book may be the cheapest way to study it.

If your goal is to learn Palmistry, Tarot, Runes, or whatever, then you should study that discipline.

If you want to learn them all then study them all.

I have studied cold reading, Palmistry, Tarot, and Runes; my favorite is Palmistry. Actually, I should say I study Hand Analysis since I do not restrict myself to what is found in Palmistry books. I also study medical texts and body language texts.

I have all of Richard Webster's books, audios, and videos on readings; I like them all!

And I really like holding hands with women!

First learn a "method" cards, runes, palm etc; Then get The Dance by Brad Henderson. I only wish I had this book 20 years ago.

"Quick and Effective Cold Reading" certainly is a difficult book to find, but I ordered one by phone about an hour ago from Misdirections, and was assured that there are several more in stock right now. $40 plus $3.85 shipping. Just an FYI.

I can't vouch for Rowland's book but I can tell you that I've been doing readings for over 12 years and the Webster book is what started me off. I also agree that you should follow it up with The Dance.

David.

Hmmm.

After finally deciding to hunt down and buy "Quick and Effective Cold Reading" by Richard Webster, I find myself scratching my head in perplexitude...

*THIS* is the great Holy Grail of cold reading that everyone is always recommending? This slapdash, poorly produced booklet that teaches a few dozen vague stock lines and a tiny bit about palmistry? I wouldn't give it a second thought if it weren't for the nearly constant stream of high praise from all the heavy hitters.

I guess I've been spoiled by all of the terrific materials that have come out within the last few years, including those by Ian Rowland, Kenton, Brad Henderson and several others. They've all been wonderfully helpful in doing many readings over the last couple of years. It just boggles my brain that people often post messages trashing Ian and Kenton, while saying that Q&ECR is the cream of the crop.

Mind you, I'm not merely whining; I'm genuinely confused! And I really enjoy Richard's shut eye books for the public, all of which are about 50 times more informative, for a fraction of the price.

As a relative newbie at reading, I realize I might be off the mark somehow, but am I the only one who is rather, um... underwhelmed... by this highly touted masterpiece..?

Seth

(p.s. Misdirections is my new fave shop! Large selection of books, tiny shipping charge, friendly service and superfast delivery. Thumbs up!)

In an earlier post from Ian Rowland, you said:

"Richard Webster's books are very good in terms of giving the reader a 'fast track' way to assimilate enough to be able to go out and give effective readings. Martin Breese kindly sent me Richard's CD of Quick & Effective readings when it first came out, and it is a very useful learning tool because you can actually hear Richard giving some short readings to people." IR

What I would like to know Ian, is the info on Richard's first CD, the same as the book ? Or is it on the second and third CD in this series ? Which one of the three reflect the "Palm Reading" aspect?
The CD in Lee Earle's The Gentle Art of Cold Reading, is what makes his so invaluable. Being able to listen while driving in your car. Lee's work is truly "integral", especially for the price.
Does anyone have a comparative perspective on these works?
Thanks
John

Personally I think that If you get Ians book and study it you will end up with a cold reading skill for life. I was cold reading before I got the book, I couldn't believe that he described every thign I was doing and I had at that point never bought a cold reading book, every thing from asking a person if they had ever been to another reader to making reading more convinceing.
Not every one will agree with me, but I learned the old fashioned way and I would have to endorse Ians as he described every thing I was doing and gave me much more info besides.
Thumbs up here.

HW (sent you a PM),

In this field, it is very apparent right away that "life experience" comes heavily into play here. Especially when it's about feeling comfortable with talking to people. Having a background in performing magic or theater, for small or large crowds makes this (cold reading) seem a lot warmer.

I've noticed as with all other people skills, pausing and listening consciously, is the "magic" that makes it all work. The resulting feeling of effortlessness that flows between the reader and subject then becomes the "real thing". A genuine connection.

SETH:

I thought exactly the same as you when I first got Richard's book "Quick and Effective Cold Readings". I thought it was a piece of crap. But trust me. Read it and start to apply it, and you will be taken aback by the responses it gets.

This really is a classic on the subject. It will get you up and running doing quick readings anywhere anytime that will really make an impact on just about anyone even septics!

Trust me. Give it a serious go! You will be glad you did.

In my opinion, Richard Webster's Commercial Cold Reading CDs are wonderful adjuncts to his excellent books on cold reading.

The first recording of the series discusses many of the concepts Webster outlines in his Quick and Effective Cold Reading book, and with the added feature of an actual recorded palmistry reading that demonstrates his ideas in action.

This recording also includes a discussion of using Webster's techniques within the framework of a numerology reading. Webster's Further Commercial Cold Reading continues the discussion established in the first recording, expanding his techniques in the areas of card divination, aura readings, and other applications.

I believe the two CDs are very worthwhile as valuable insights from a successful working professional concerning how to put together meaningful and very credible psychic readings.

Thanks, Joe, that's what I was looking for.

If one listens frequently while driving, like I do, you can focus and learn very fast. Just playing it in the car keeps you in it's presence, and you can't help but absorb what you're listening to, especially with the kind of subject matter that this is.

It's not "sleight of hand", but more "frame of mind". CDs seem to perfect to me for this type of work.

John

And now to top it off, I found a copy of Quick and Effective Cold Reading (book), on ebay yesterday. Picked it up inexpensively. Smile

Next is the CD. LOL

You can't. It is out of print, and if you discount auction sites, there is no place you will likely find it.

Hi all,

Is Ian Rowland's book actually a book? As in, hardback/softback book. I've heard somewhere that the Full Facts Cold Reading is only staple bound, but I couldn't see anything on his website. Don't suppose it matters, but I'd like to know before I buy it. Cheers!
