...Futoshiki.

The game is played on a 5x5 grid of squares. Like the other two games, you must use each number from 1-5 only once in each column and row. In Futoshiki there are also sometimes inequality signs between neighboring cells which which must be obeyed (> greater than, < less than)

Here's one to get you started:

Great routine for combining Sudoku and the illusion of math proficiency. Take a blank Sudoku sheet, volunteer puts a digit 1-9 in any order at the center of each of the nine squares. With only one non-matching digit in each square you accurately fill in the entire Sudoku puzzle in less than two minutes. Anyone heard of it? I really like the routine which is extremely easy and 100 % accurate and quite impressive and puzzling to Sudoku players. Players know that the more given numbers in the puzzle and more positioning of the numbers make the puzzle easier to solve. To have only a single number in a square and all in the same position makes it more baffling.

Wow. I'm pretty sure I've figured out a way of doing what slowkneenuh proposes. That is, if given a 9x9 Sudoku grid, made up of nine 3x3 squares with a different number in the center of each 3x3 square, I can produce a well-formed Sudoku solution within a few minutes.

Not so easy to articulate my method, but I'm willing to prove I can do it, if someone can figure out a good way to test me.

Thanks, slowkneenuh for bringing this to my attention.

You're welcome landmark. You can have a lot of fun with this with any level of Sudoku player. It even works with non-Sudoku players as a feat of you filling in a 9 x 9 square in minutes without ever repeating a digit in the same row or column.

Left to right, top to bottom, here are the center numbers for you
7,2,5...3,6,8...1,9,4

You can track your own speed, Just list your solution for me if you feel like it.

Slowkneenuh, it's hard with the formatting issues here to show my solution. I'll drop you a PM with my method. Anyone who is interested in my method can drop me a PM and I'll send you my write-up.

Okay, just sent you a PM with my method. Under my method, your middle 3x3 sub-square would read 7,3,1...2,6,9...5,8,4.

You got it! I'll check your PM now. If you use the method I know, you would have "slid" some of the given numbers to make a vertical column in the center and then "slid" them again to make a horizontal row in the center. Then it is just plugging in a repeating pattern of numbers from the horizontal row that allows you to quickly fill it in. Hope you enjoy it.
