Hello everybody
I'm interested in the art of mentalism and mental effects.. my question is , how mentalists perform their effects?! how they can perfectly predict/guess what number, word, or draw other person gonna choose, without using any tool?! I already done reading Cornida's 13 steps and Annemann's practical mental magic, and they really contain very good tricks .. but they still need sleights of hand (they are tricks) .. but I want to learn advanced techniques .. what topics should I read about, and what skills should I develop?! what "sleights of minds" should I learn in order to perform mental effects?! I already have good knowledge and practice about hypnosis .. what other things to learn?! in short, how to be a mentalist just like Oz Pearlman or Derren Brown?! |

Advanced techniques are precisely that, advanced and usually highly personal (most peoples have their own methods that would fall flat if done by someone else).
The better way is probably to learn the tricks, perform them and try to do it for real (you should quickly pick small clues and methods that will build over time): the tricks will serve as a safety net. |

I mean by advanced techniques .. how to perform mentalism effect based entirely on psychological principles (skills) rather than sleights of hands?!
so my main question is WHAT should I learn?! |

Which effect do you want to do ?
My previous recommendation stands: approximate it with a trick, stay focused and you will start to identify things that works and patterns in your subjects. They will develop into methods that work for you. The methods I use would be of no use to you. There is a reason why Pearlman and Brown were magicians in the past : it gave them a way to fake it until they could do it |

I am not sure I understand your question. You read 13 steps and those are tricks and what you want to become is a real mentalists since Pearlman and Brown don't use tricks?

There are books on propless mentalist. I suggest a search of this board for titles.
Corinda has a chapter on "super mentality" that is propless and most of it really is "doing it for real." You could build an act from just that material. Check out videos of Arthur Benjamin for a guy who can make an act out of doing math problems in his head. If you want propless mind reading, that is pretty advanced. Some performances are apparently done without props but use hidden gimmicks. Some depend on psychology, some depend on pure luck. Most such will work well for only one person. And that is the person doing those routines. I understand what you are after, but I figured out later than most that it isn't in the next book or video. It truly is a matter of performing until you can do it. Patrick |

Before going on any further, how about telling us a but about yourself, what you perform now -if anything - and why you are attracted to mentalism as a performance art.

I still performing card tricks, since I love that, but the mental type of card magic. in addition, I depend -almost- entirely on Cornida's and Annemann's, and reading the mental part of many other magic books as well. the reason I decided to learn about mentalism is that I've been always fascinated about the human mind, how and why people behave in a such way. what I love about mentalism is that it has a very powerful impact on people. when I'm watching magic, I feel that mentalism effect has way stronger impact on me than other kind of magic tricks, as it's not leaving any clue, since mentalists use little to no tools at all. |

For the first step in learning the real thing, have a look at some of Paul Ekman's material.

If you want to learn you first have to listen. The teacher will appear when the student is ready.
If you really want to be a mentalist and you are not some kind of troll, pay attention to what other users are saying. I seriously doubt you read both corinda and annemann, but you have the benefit of the doubt. You say you want to perform mentalism using psychological principles. This is the first misunderstanding you have about the art. Don't get me wrong, the psychology behind the art is so very important, but trust me, that's not what you are after. Get this book http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/3810 Study it and comprehend the information within it. If after you are done reading it you don't like what you've read, then mentalism is not what you are looking for. The artful mentalism 2 is one of the greatest books on mentalism. It's author, Bob Cassidy, sadly passed away recently. It's a shame newer members and new incomers to the art won't feel the joy of receiving advice from here, as he was a great poster here. But his legacy will last forever. |

Ib. There's a lot to learn to get to the level of those you've mentioned. There's also a lot to learn that will likely never be overtly discussed that you will have to come to a conclusion of on your own.
There's tons and tons of info out there. You'll have to find what connects with you. Let Oz and DB be an inspiration but not exactly the goal.

A person new to martial arts does not walk into a dojo and say he wants to start with black belt techniques. You must learn forms, techniques etc. The basics. Again there are no shortcuts. You want to be a good Mentalist? Then you must first pay your dues and be bruised and bloodied in battle. Good luck.
