I know this is a pretty broad question and not something that has a definite or easy answer but I looking for what you would recommend for someone starting out in the bizarre magical arena. Is there a book(s) or DVD that is especially good to provide a foundation? Is there another website that you recommend to help coach or guide someone beginning their journey?
I'm pretty much a blank slate looking for the perfect inscription to put on it. I don't know which direction I want to go with yet but then that is half the fun isn't it? deciding on which path to take when you reach a fork . . . to turn down the dark alley or venture into the sinister forest. And as always, they you for your time and suggestions for they are greatly appreciated.

To each their own, of course, but I find these books to be invaluable. A deep dive into Bizarre that will leave you gasping.

Thank you Perkins, I will definitely check those out. I had the pleasure of attending a few of Eugene Burger's lectures and performances at Fun, Inc in Chicago back in the early 1990's.

Did you mean FUN Inc OR MAGIC Inc.? (I didn't know that my friend Graham Putnam, owner of FUN Inc. was sponsoring lectures!)

I found Black Hart's 'The BIG Black Book' to be hugely helpful and written in an easy. conversational tone, containing many effects and a huge bundle of advice.
It's what persuaded me to stop collecting and start performing. http://www.blackhart.co.uk/books.html |

Dick, you are correct. Magic Inc. My mind and my words are sometimes on different conversations.

Paul Prator has some good lectures on marketing for magic http://www.paulprater.com/index.html If you like tarot Paul Voodini has good material. Also going to a convention like ECSS or Doomsday may help you start out. http://www.eastcoastspiritsessions.com/ https://www.lebanoncircle.co.uk/collections/doomsday

I asked the same question related to the more Storytelling-oriented forms of Bizarre magic, and compiled a list that others added to in this thread:
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=161 Also found some great audio tales that would make good routines: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=161 And finally a thread showcasing Storytelling resources: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=161 Look for Bizarre Magic props at Hocus Pocus and Stevens Magic Emporium, and if you want some custom oddities to add a little spice to your act, Doug Higley is still making 'Zibits: http://lionpoint.studio/ PM me if you're looking for anything in particular Best, jmg

I would also add Tony Chris's Karnival of Magic DVD. It is basically informal bizarre-lite (no offense intended) with an emphasis on classical methods and effects, rather than narrative and historicity. Unlike some atmospheric bizarre publications, you could go out and start performing it tomorrow.

Not knowing what you do, or want to do all I can offer is advice on the conjuring part.
Amateur Magicians Handbook The Bill Tarr books (Now You See It, Now You Don't, 1 and 2, and 101 Easy-to-Do Magic Tricks) The Mark Wilson Course in Magic and if you have some $ to spend, Tarbell These will give you a good basic foundation in methods and effects. |

Are you a magician? Are you looking to explore bizarre in general? Do you want to do magic tricks? Do you want to appear to do real magic? Do you want it to be about what you can do or what the spectator can do? Are you a good storyteller does that interest you? There are lots of questions to be answered first or its a long road...

John, you're in rescue ... take some of the things you have seen and heard from those using 'Fake Weed' and add your spin on them to come up with some truly bizarre back stories !
