As a Nearly Normal Counselor working in a middle and high school, I find magic very useful.

It is an excellent

1. Icebreaker
2. Method/Prop for object lessons.
3. example of having fun without being loaded(alcohol and drugs, not jumbo coin loads)
4. Draw to tables where I hand out information

In my last evaluation, my supervisor noted that I am
an Ambassador for our school based programs. Part of that feedback, I believe was based on my use of humor and magic.

In a few weeks I will share with other County Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist.(no secrets revealed, just things I use in my Magic of Choices Program.

Lately I am using a pencil with an eraser on both ends as my Nearly Normal Wand.

Enjoy the journey.

Happy HOYC.

Okay, so you've found a situation where you can do magic in and maybe you want to do some coin stuff. Does anyone break out a close up mat for their halves or do you all stay with the safer, more obvious keeping it in the hands (yours/spectators)?

Cheers

I have done both.

When asked to do classroom presentation, I may even bring in my straight Jacket. The close up mat is used as well.

Mostly it is in the hands or in the frame parallel to my chest.(coins across, one coin flurry....)

As a wand, I use a pencil with two ended erasers. The caption on the "wand" is "Doing drugs is pointless".

You know the company's really watching their money lately but if they would just look inside the pen caps ... coins, bills from the cap.

I actually use magic in my profesion, i´m a doctor, and most of the times I present a trick by my own initiative it´s for small patients and their parents... but I actually have more recuests from the other personal in the hospital, which allows me to have a better relation with everybody, from nurses to social workers. Right know i´m known as the magical doctor... it´s actually a great profesional aid, as it breaks the ice and lets you get a smile or two...

I have the full story of this over in the "What Happened was This" forum, but to make it short a few days ago I got introuble for doing magic on the job. This is not a job where magic would be harmfull in anyway and by brighting someones day I could indrectly improve the biz of the store. My tricks on the clock took no more then 30 secs or so and I was also not performing often. I have been a harder worker there then many other people but yet I get called down when there are others who will waste hours a week talking. I guess in this case it really comes down to who the boss likes and who he does not. More like who is brown noseing and who is not.

I work in retail (God help me not go insane!) Yesterday was the 2nd time I have done magic on the job. No customers in the store and the managers asked to see some stuff. It was a slow day so I ended up performing for each employee personally..plus a couple customers.

I am also in the process of trying to hook up restaurant work. If I can get that going I will be oh so happy.

D.Siller,
ok coin from crying child's ear (maybe spellbound change it to a chocolate coin). What else do you use?
I'd be very interested to hear about this.
Thanks

Being a bartender everyday is magic for me. I get to perform all the time. My main job is slinging beer/ but I usually do a 10 minute set every hour on the hour. When not doing the set I do stuff here and there. I find that it helps with the tips and also helps me come up with patter. I am very lucky to have a job were it is accepted that I am a magician. I am not sure I could have any other job and be as happy as I am.

I've got kind of a weird job. I separate people from their teeth. Magic provides a break in the tension and anxiety - expecially for the kids. Jeff

As an attorney, I spend much of my day staring at a computer, reading, and writing. I often keep a coin palmed or do one-handed cuts with a deck of cards while I read or type. Since my practice consists mainly of artists and entertainer clients, they never have a problem with me showing them a routine, especially if I’m using it to illustrate a point (“if you’re not careful, under this clause your money can disappear,” kind of thing).
I’ve actually gotten jobs by using magic as an ice breaker.
