I saw this done at a Renaissance Faire a few weeks ago and I'd like more information about it.

A fellow was walking around with a large (maybe 6-inch), wooden, 6-sided die. He'd find someone to play against.

The rules:
He rolls the die (in the grass or dirt) and the topmost number begins the running total.
He and the mark take turns moving the die a quarter turn, adding the new topmost number to the running total. They share the running total.
As I recall, he even gives the mark the option of going first or second.
The winner is the first person to move the die to expose a side that brings the total to 30.

The guy never lost. I imagine the winning strategy involves making sure you hit the total of 23, so the mark can't hit 30, but you can hit 30 after that.

Anyone know the name of this game or how it works?

Hi,

Dr. Jacob Daley converted in 1945 the well known con game "31" to a con dice game.
I own articles from the german magic magazine "Magische Welt":
WGR: "Dr. Daleys Würfeltrick"; Magische Welt, Nr. 10/1959
and
eastgerman magic magazine "Zauberkunst", Hanns Thielemann: "Dalays 31-System"; Zauberkunst 1983, Nr. 1, p.42.

Ken de Courcy IMHO also published about the game.
---------

Primary key numbers (reached by 1 - 6): 4, 13, 22.
(It's digital root is 4)

Secundary key numbers:
- Reached by 3 or 4:
5, 14, 23;
9, 18, 27;
10, 19, 28.

- Reached by 2 or 5:
8, 17, 26.

- Reachesd by 1 or 6:
30

To win: The first player must start with 4 else he can loose.

---------

Dr. Rhode - an eastgerman magician - submitted in the 19sixties his system.
He deals only with key number higher 20.
The key numbers are 22 - 23 - 26 - 27 - 28 - 30

22: reached by 1 - 6
23: by 3 or 4
26: by 2 or 5
27: by 3 or 4
28: by 3 or 4
30: by 1 or 6 (a little joke)

Kind regards,
Hans-Christian

This is not the same as in the original:
The winner is the first person to move the die to expose a side that brings the total to 31.
On the other hand a person loses with a total more than 31.

Just a heads up for anyone who is interested: Dr. Daley's original write-up is in Gibson's The Conjurors' Magazine Vol. 1, No. 2 (March 1945).

I'm interested in this but I'm being a bit thick and so having trouble understanding the explanation!

If anyone would be good enough to spell it out for me or point me to a resource that's readily available online, I'd be very grateful. Thanks.

I would like if someone would confirm whether the 31 die trick is referenced in Learn Magic Cyclopedia .
I had written notes that I think came from this reference. Thanks if can confirm or not.

Sounds interesting
"The New York Papers," Mark Twain once said,"have long known that no large question is ever really settled until I have been consulted; it is the way they feel about it, and they show it by always sending to me when they get uneasy. "
