I used to always carry pen thru bill with me to every booking as it takes up very little space, instant reset and always played strong, although I didn't always perform the effect it was great to have as a back up should I need it.
This got me to thinking especially with all the youtube exposure does anyone still use pen thru bill as aprt of their working repertoire these days ? |

I use another method, even though my partner Tom Allen came up with some excellent handling for this shortly after it came out.
By the way, The effect is not pen through bill (anyone can do that). The effect is Torn and Restored Bill. I don't say this to say that you do it wrong Warren because, of course, I've never seen you perform (and I understand that you are just describing the trick by name). I only say it because it is so prevalent for the Magician to poke the bill and frame it like that was the trick for a second. This is weird to the Spectators. -Mary Mowder |

I'm a bit confused Mary do you mean that you still perform the effect or that you actually perform a different version rather than the typical gimmicked version ?
To answer your question yes I'm just naming the effect and of course I perform it as a torn and restored type of effect |

Same effect, different method. My B*ll has a f*ld and my pencil in normal. Handling and patter cover all. It plays just as well for me. The display of the penetration is not as open but there is never any fear of a flying p*n tip. or a YouTube watcher nailing it.
The f*ld is covered by the print on the B*ll. I have to hold tension on the final display to keep it from showing, especially in some lighting conditions but I have never had a problem with those aspects of the trick. It is really more about the fun with the audience so I don't have a lot of "burning" going on. There is genuine surprise when the b*ll is restored though. -Mary Mowder |

Thanks for sharing Mary and I'm glad to hear that method works well and it's great that it can fool the youtube crowd in this case though I'm more interested to hear if people out there are still using the old basic method in working situations.

I still perform Pen through bill,I have and still use both of the the original John Cornelius versions. I also perform Sharpie through bill, pencil through bill (ungimmicked), BIC pen (gimmicked and ungimmicked) through bill, and (when around smokers actually smoking) burning cigarette through bill. Which I perform depends on venue, my set-up and preparedness, Currently I tend to carry Sharpies for signing cards, etc. so will add the Sharpie through bill prop (Harry Robson's) and perform it on an off beat.

Your obviously a fan of the effect Harry I have a cheap basic pen thru which I love and was my go to when working as it took up such little space. From time to time I also use an impromptu version which I picked up off an old Jim Pace video although I can't remember the name of the effect it basically involved wrapping a paper napkin around a bill but obviously any paper covering would work.
I purchased Ignition a few months back however it's not so well self contained and I should imagine it's quite easy to loose the all important bit so for now it's been relegated to the drawer unless I can come up with a better and practical solution for carrying it around whilst also allowing for a quick and practical get ready. |

To me Ignition is not as effective as the pen through bill. And yes, I still do it. I'm on my fourth one because I keep losing the part. Pen through bill is so simple and so convincing - and everybody focuses on the bill - that's the beauty of this effect. I do wear a PK ring while doing this - it helps manage the gimmick.

I still use it and the reactions remain strong enough to continue to do so. I think my handling and routine have something to do with it! LOL

Warren - I think exposure is an issue normally when someone on TV performs a trick, then lots of people look it up. So I think pen through bill is pretty safe to use now. I may bring it out myself after leaving it for almost 20 years! T
I wonder if there's a good patter line and use for it with the new £5? Just mulling over a few lines & thoughts. Dusted off the pen & practiced it at home the other week a couple of times and it does seem to work on the new notes. Have a long list of 'new' things to introduce from things I've bought over the years and they are still waiting patiently in line so I don't know if I'll give this a go or not yet...

I started using it again after watching Magick Balay's penguin lecture. His handling is the best.
The trick actually plays really strong. I often open with a bill change and then pen through bill. Another interesting use is that the standard pen through bill (black one with short tip) fits quite nicely through my johnson cigarette through half dollar. And it's also just strong enough to do a pen through real half dollar. I haven't performed it yet, but my plan is to do a pen through half dollar (with the gimmick half dollar), then if they ask me to repeat the effect, I can repeat it using a real half dollar and the gimmick for the pen. Also, I don't think I've ever performed magic for someone who looks at magic exposure videos. The general population doesn't spend their time on youtube figuring out how magic tricks are done. The TT is the only gimmick that some people know about in my experience (and they only know about it in the context of a silk vanish). |

I carry Pointless. It can be used on its own or as a pen through bill.

I perform still the same but have the people first inspect the pen. They also use to sign the money.
