Totally agree Salsa
The move from laymen to performer has the one disadvantage that the impact of a miracle is never as strong as what was before you studied the art. The advantage is that you have a greater appreciation for the artistry of the performance. It's like going to see the London Philharmonic as a fellow musician or a music lover. The ability to play should enhance your appreciation of the music while detracting for the amazement at how it is achieved. The music lover who does not play will often react with amazement at the skill of the performers but miss the subtle nuances of talent that enthrall the fellow musician. Muggy |

Agree with Salsa - how good the performance is shouldn't just be measured by whether you as a mentalist can work out the method.
I was impressed with his level of stage presence and charisma, and the control of audience. Additionally, even when you know some of the effects it is really valuable to see how he structures and times the effects. |

I agree, everything flows so smoothly and you never get the impresssion you are seeing trick after trick after trick. Something that many performers fail to do.
And anyone that can make a magic square entertaining to a degree that you'd use it as a closer has a serious thumbs up in my book |

I was then invited to see it again towards the end of his tour at the Alban Arena, and without a doubt it was not the same Derren. Believe me, it's not because I had already seen the show and therefore knew what was coming. It just wasn't the same Derren. Less energy, less spark, less flair. I'm guessing the extremely busy schedule (we're talking about a show every other night) kind of took it out of him. I hope this isn't the case again. On your point about the glass not smashing. It's probably due to him changing his show every now and then. A friend of mine saw him and he didn't do PK Touches or Lift, which I had seen when I went on both occasions. |

I saw his tour when it was at London last year and can honestly say its the best peice of theatre and magic performance I have ever see. (having been to many many features at the Magic Circle)
Big thumbs up for it. Credit also to Andy Nyman who I believe had a huge input into the project and is credited in the brochure. |

I missed him last year - saw him this year.
He was full of fun and energy (during the first half; the second half, as those who have seen the show, has a different tone). There were real gasps from the audience in the second half and real laughs in the first half. I too understand (or assume I do) the mechanics of most of the effects, but his stage presence, audience management and delivery was first class and shows what a gap there is between knowing the effects and actually performing them (more than) competently - i.e. I don't think I could. Thoroughly enjoyed myself and recommend it. Beetroot |

I think the difference in the two halves was interesting. I saw the show twice with two different groups of non-mentalists and all preferred the first half. You can see what he is doing in terms of structure - however I personally think he comes across much better in the first half. I liked the second half, and recognise the material is much darker, however I felt at times he came across as over-acting/ over-dramatic. Just my opinion - the show was still fantastic.

I was happy to pay the admission price just to see how effective a magic square routine could be! That was astounding.

I saw the show Friday and was quite surprised that despite being "sold" as sold out the theatre was only three quarters full. I counted over 100 empty seats on my row. The show was good and I was a little dissapointed I didn't go away with that "WoW" factor. Maybe Im becoming to jaded? Also noted it interesting that a lot of the tv work cant be transfered to "live Theatre" . The second half was definetly better, how did he do that telephone directory trick??? lol. A few misses in the first half with not getting a girls surname and a useless spectator who could not count backwards without falling asleep. Thought the seance was the best bit would have been great to see the table float around.

I saw his sheffield show last night and was very impressed. His timing was fantastic and his stage presence, incredible.
managed to meet him briefly afterwards to congratluate him and get my books signed, seemed a v nice guy The only thing I could say which to be honest was a little unfortunate was during the phone book effect, in the sheffield area there are severel local phone books, so the routine dragged as alot of the volunteers were actually in a different book to that being used, but this was minimal when considering the impact the show had as a whole.

I thought the Derren Brownm Stage show was excellent I went with a laymen and he came out of it taling about the phonebook test, But I preffered the second half where he gets that whole theatre involved and the magic square was brilliant I will defiantly go and see him again.

Got to say there was a problem with the Telephone Book Test when I saw him in Nottingham. However, this was because most people couldn't actually remember whether they were in the telephone book or not. The first three he chose were not even in the book, which I thought was highly amusing.
However, I did think that the show overall was extremely good. More light hearted than his TV Specials which I don't think would have transferred well to the stage anyway. Most of the people who attended the show that I saw were lay people and he was rewarded at the end with a full standing ovation. I was actually surprised that he was so popular with ordinary members of the general public. I thought the sceance prediction letter was well done. Very good and very sneaky. Also, without doubt the best presentation of the Magic Square I have ever seen. A lesson to us all in good stagecraft. I always admired Derren, after seeing him live, I still rate him very highly indeed |
