I've noticed that in most street magic vids posted - the crowd has already been gathered and you miss-out seeing that vital struggle of getting those first few spectators.
Check out this vid and watch this guy work hard to get the first small group to stop. He then builds from there to a nice sized group. If anyone else has vids like that... please post. As a beginner I would love to watch! Thanks so much. Dave https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfP5be4AqXw |

Watch street performers BUT NO MAGICIANS. see how jugglers do it, street dancers. if you understand that apply to yoour show.

"Freestyle cups for fellow magician" is a good example of me building a crowd from a single person:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmnNPoNN9ys This is an example of my "crowd goes wild" technique which you can learn through my two-part video lecture series complete with a full day of example footage of me working ... all free via my "pass the hat" license ... the basic idea is to do something until someone is watching then engage them, just like you see in the above example: http://magicjoint.com/pages/magic-shop/t......d-promo/ -JoeJoe

I have been pondering about crowd building in the sense of building up from small half circled 15-25 to bigger half circle shows 30-50. And in my notes I came up with A juggler can pull out a set of knives and say I will juggle these razor sharp knives and people will hang around. I know a guy that learnt to swallow a single flame purly so during his act he can keep making the promise of swallowing the flame and people stick around. But with magic we cant say and I will take your signed bill and it will appear in that lemon. Yeas we can make promise of amazing things. One thing I use to help with this is Mario Morris Most Dangerous Card Trick Once I pull out that animal trap and promise 'the most dangerous thing your going to see today' They are not moving.
This leads on to another thing Magicans don't have the big eye candy props as such, Like a 12ft Uni-cycle, fire torches, chain saw and the like. I see potential in pop Hayden transporter device. You cam pull it out it makes noise and you say what it is and what its capable of. In other note and looking at photo I think Magicans dress to ordinary compared to other street entertainers like jugglers and acrobats. It take more then a waist coat and hat to stand out. (I am guilty of this to point were I have considered burning my go to costume and buying something ridicules from a costume shop) Any how a bit of topic but hopw it helps
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |

When I start going out I used an oversized top hat to stand out from the crowd. It did the job. Eventually I start feeling more confortable speaking loud and more relaxed and I don't wear it anymore. Today it doesn't matter how I'm dressed, they will stop. Why?
1st thing is CONFIDENCE, they can see it in my body language, my chest is full of air, my gestures are wide open, I speak loud, I don't care if they think I'm crazy. Fear and shyness will afect your performance and getting the 1st spectators. How can you solve that? Easy, go out and perform many times as you can. Without us saying anything, our body speaks a lot. 2nd thing I do is asking names. In my mind is more than that, is making friends. Ask the names of the 1st spectators, shake their hands, invite them to your " office ". Some jokes now and then, say that the show will start in 3 minutes, for example. Now that you get the 1st spectators use them to get more people. How? Clapping, making noise, will atract more people. Start the show and promise that it's coming something big, something that they will enjoy ( make sure that you have it). Another thing: don't put too much pressure in stopping them. It's worst. Relax, smile, speak to people, be bigger than you are, think of you as Superman. There are other ways to do it, but this works for me. Helder

Hey thanks to everyone for all the help and advice!
Hey Joejoe I've seen your crowd goes wild videos... they are gold for a beginner like me... so thanks so much! I wanted to share that video for people that might enjoy watching a magician build from scratch. It's just so rare we actually get to see that. It was interesting that he used 3 card monte on the ground (no table) to build his crowd. That guy did a lot of card magic. |

My trick is to do magic for the people in the window of the pizza place I work in front of. A lot of time, this leads to people on the street stopping to watch what I am doing. Also, the people in the restaurant come out and drop money in my bucket! (I'm not good enough for a hat! ) I can't draw a big crowd because I'm on a sidewalk, outside a pizza place with tables outside. There's not a lot of room.

Sounds to me like your doing a trickle show.
They watch a couple effects, drop a few bucks and move on. Way to go, pizza parlors are always good. |

That is exactly what I am doing. I don't know of anyplace in Providence that would be good for a circle show. (Forget the park at Kennedy Plaza, it's dive for the homeless who frequent the Plaza itself.)
