Hi everyone!
I'm looking for bizarre effects that have their performance linked to Secret Societies, such as Rosae Crucis (AMORC) or Freemasonry. Someone to give me an idea? Thanks ! |

Freemasonry is a society with secrets, not a a secret society. I don't mean to be a pedant, however there is a difference.
I use Taylor Imagineering's Equinox with a set of white (and one black) ball. PM me if you want more detail. |

I don't happen to be one who has "traveled in the east", but, I have been "accused" of being a pedant, just because I have corrected a few "magicians" who don't know the difference between a "trick" and an "effect". Dr Rudolf Flesch wrote a book in the early '50s, titled: "Why Johnnie Can't Read". Many educators had "abandoned" helping youngsters to learn how to read, by using phonics. Students were expected to learn a word from contextual clues, configuration of words, and pictures in story books, instead of using phonics. Can you imagine the number of functional illiterates, that this produced!

Sounds like you might could benefit from The Ring. While not an effect itself, it would add a touch of mystery and validity to the performance.

There was a collectible card game put out a number of years ago by Steve Jackson games, available now in a non-collectible format, called "Illuminati" the Game of Conspiracy.
https://www.amazon.com/Steve-Jackson-Gam......56343841 While this is not a magic effect, the CARDS in the game feature various secret societies, and could be used to give any number of card effects an Illuminati theme. This might be a more whimsical tone than you are after, but it would at least give you themed components you could use immediately as well as possibly prototype a new effect or routine before making your own cards with vintage art. Finally, I saw this box several years ago and was going to order it "just in case" I ever needed it, but never did. You might find a use for it: https://mcphee.com/products/illuminati-storage-box

Sanctum ii, if the society does not need to be a well known one
you can probably find a used copy of the effect by posting a WTB in the For Sale section |

Nice link for the AMOC. Interesting reading back issues (from the 1920's) of the Mystic Triangle publication free on the site. Lots of ideas to mine....

I believe"Time of Death" is the type of routine that you are looking for. It revolves around members of the famous "Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn" to which Aleister Crowley once belonged, along with the poet William Butler Yates. Here is an abbreviated clip of a performance of the routine: https://youtu.be/U0_mSBq_ruM

Lybrary.com has an inexpensive ebook: More Masonic Magic by Thomas Blacke. I haven't read it.
There are Masonic playing cards available. I have these, but I'm not terribly impressed - although mine came in a beautiful metal box which doesn't seem to be available any more. They are still available, without the metal box, from Freemasons' Hall in London, as single or double packs. Barry |

Why not just invent one? You can make your own rules and secrets to go with your performance theme. Perhaps a secret society of embalmers who may reveal what REALLY goes on in the funeral industry and how the public is deceived.

You can give them the handshake and ask, "What are you doing?" And they will say, "Nothing." Give it a try at the next funeral you go to. I personally quit attending the funeral of my friends because I am tired of going to the funeral of people who aren't coming to mine.

There is a very nice Masonic Tarot Deck:
http://www.phoenixmasonry.org/masonicmus......onic.htm It has been constructed in a "masonic" way (see backside) which gives a few possibilities to use this in Magic Effects. And, it is a very nice Deck imhO, I am happy that I own one. In addition I happen to have a masonic switch box which was beautifully crafted by Marc Charisse who you could find here. |
