Three Gospel routines/ideas:
*****John 4:1-42: "The Samaritan Woman": I am telling this story using three rice bowls (available from Abbott's Magic for $36), a "wishing well" planter from Wayfair.com (Item MC1025 American Mercantile Fir Pot Planter), the "Lessons from John Speed Sketch DVD" from Wesleyan Publishing (tells the story of The Samaritan Woman and includes pictures to color, etc.) and finally "The Samaritan Woman Well Craft Kit" from Oriental Trading. Sunday School kids view the Bible story on DVD first, then I go through the story once again using the magic rice bowls (I used dried beans instead of rice) with the two lota rice bowls at the end pouring water into the well- which then turns into "whiter than snow" snow. Finally, the kids get the coloring sheet hand outs/and the craft to put together with their teachers. This craft is fantastic tie in with the story and a great reminder of the lesson to take home with them. *****Luke 10:27: I use three linking rings- one key ring (which is the "God" ring) and two regular rings. The first link with the key ring emphasizes loving the Lord with all our hearts. Then unlink. Then the second linking is done using another method to emphasize loving God with all our soul. Unlink. Repeat linking and unlinking the two rings for strength and mind. So four different linkings. Finally, three rings are linked to emphasizing loving your neighbor as yourself. Daryl's DVD "Essentials in Magic Linking Rings" (from Penguin Magic and many other dealers) teaches many completely different methods to link and unlink two rings- pick the four you like best and then the one final method (Daryl again teaches at least four) how to link three rings together *****Changed lives "The Nines" theme: I posted about this in 2010 on The Magic Café'. I personally love Duane Laflin's "Russian Rings" routine. Available from Laflin Magic Store and you can view the video of the basic routine there. Many other dealers also have it in stock as well. You can use Russian Rings as an opener to music (as MagicBob does). A beautiful effect- it makes me feel like a real performer/magician when I use it. With some practice, it is fun to perform and hopefully is very colorful and different for the audience/kids to watch. I do the rings very slowly- telling a short Bible story of a changed life (black to sparkly ring) every time the ring is changed (three times). Using first Duane's ideas, tell how the lives of the blind man (John 9), and the healing stories (blind men, sick woman, possessed man) from and/either/or Matthew 9 or Mark 9, and the life of Saul/Paul (Acts 9) as each ring changes color. All these stories of changed lives are from the 9th Chapter of Matthew, Mark, John and Acts. And all these people became spiritually "dressed to the Nines"- getting completely new lives in Christ! (We used to say getting on our very best formal clothes for a special occasion was getting "dressed to the nines"). Again, I do the routine very slowly while talking/going quickly through each Bible story (just the very basic event, not all the complete details) and it still works well. At the end of the routine, I put the sparkly ring around my own face- Christ changed my life too (and then take the rings down showing them again)- not only those from centuries ago- He can can and will change everyone's life here today! (End routine with Gospel message, Romans 6:23, etc.) |

Another idea (for any type of cut and restored type rope effect):
*****Romans 8:31-39 (The Message): If you have a cut and restored rope or string that uses a wide bladed scissors or knife: write in marker on the blade "bullying", "hard times", "backstabbing", "hatred", etc.. Then have three/four kids read portions from the "The Message" Romans 8:31-39. Then after going over these sad words written above on the scissors blades (or thick knife blade- I would not bring a knife into a school), cut the rope/string. Then stress/reread the end of the Romans 8:39 passage- NOTHING can get between us and God's love because of the way that Jesus our Master has embraced us (end of passage)- rope/string is restored! |

A couple time I skipped the above - but the idea kept coming into my head - I've used the 'Terkish Termoil'(sp?) where you put a balloon into a cylinder - close the cylinder and thrust 2 swords(mini)through it- open the cyl. - balloon pops out unharmed and you can see the swords thrust through the cyl. I print "BIBLE"on the balloon to show NOTHING can damage the WORD of THE LORD. The swords could also represent 'bullys' -etc as above - and the balloon as a person-etc. -- Ralph

Good idea Russo! I used to own "Turkish Turmoil" made by the late Glen Arturo at Abbott's Magic in Colon. Sold it at a FCM convention in the late 1970's at Winona Lake. No longer in production I believe- was a beautiful trick as you could open the cylinder and show the two swords passing through the can after the balloon was popped.

Note on the "Russian Rings" effect posts above.
www.laflinmagicstore.com is selling it new through 11/27/17 as supplies last as part of their "Black Friday Deals" for $34.99 plus postage. You won't probably ever be able to beat that deal unless you find a used set someplace. Some really great deals are on the Laflin web site right now on 19 specific sale items. I would buy a second set of the Russian Rings if I thought my set would wear out- but I don't think it ever will (in my lifetime at least). The Russian Rings does take some ongoing practice to learn and to continue to remember the routine in the future. But following Duane's DVD handling exactly, it was kinda fun to learn the moves. The trick "packs small plays big". Just a fun little visual thing to do either with a silent/musical routine or in a possible Gospel setting as discussed above. |
