Finally got my hands on a packet of these today. I have to say I was a little disappointed, I spotted the markings straight away. These don't come close to the quality or the stealth of the dmc rouges IMO. Also didn't receive password or download link from Propdog.

You do know that's kind of the point of this style of marked card? That you CAN see them straight away IF you know what you're looking for?

I love the DMC Elite Rouge deck - it'd be my go-to deck BUT I'm a cheapskate and ordering a brick of these from Penguin, even with overseas shipping, came in at about £6.60 a deck. I can get them signed, I can tear them up, I can fold them without having palpitations. The marking method is a variation on the Ted Lesley idea which was MUCH more obvious and yet mentalists have been using that for years.

Funnily enough a friend who works in a magic shop told me that nobody spots the Rouge markings until they are pointed out - and then suddenly they don't like them because they are too obvious. Typical magician thinking.

Agreed!

These Penguins Marked Cards work just fine and no one is the wiser. DMCs are very nice too but not necessary for the regular sort of deception to be successful. I guess cheating in a card game, DMCs would be great, but for most card magic effects, nice but not necessary. Plus these cheap($) Penguin Marked Cards can be mixed with regular bikes and no one would ever know the difference...I know, I do this all the time myself. Smile Generally, they are just perfect for all the things mentioned above, plus easy as heck to quickly read for the magi. What's not to like? Smile

Maiden, just like it shows on the site. And these are fantastic. Even if they won't work for your intended purpose, they are still worth the very minimal investment.

Thanks Jason I thought I read once they were and certainly seem a deck worth having . I have a new effect I want to release and although markings arenít essential they would be helpful . I want to mass produce tbese and I just know bike backs would just be most peoples preference particularly when you are looking to possibly sell a few thousand decks then itís not a marketing mistake I want to chance . Very best wishes Tarik 🙂

Maidens and Mandolins are in fact "Bikes". The bikes nickname is because they are "Bicycle Brand" manufactured by the USPCC. Do you mean "standard" (formerly known as "rider back")?

Agree with Poof-Daddy... They are "Bicycle Branded" with the Maiden back pattern. I've never had anybody call out back designs between Rider back, Mandolin, or Maiden.

While I wouldn't blend Maiden into a Rider deck, as long as they are all the same backs it will fly by virtually anyone.

All of that said, Bicycle will no longer allow gimmicked cards to be produced with the traditional Rider back. Unless something has changed very recently..

More specifically, US Playing Card Co will no longer print cards with modified Rider back designs. If it's a Rider back, they want it to be pure.

They will however still print gimmicked cards with Rider backs and modified faces (except the Ace of Spades).

Yes Tim correct as 52/1 is exactly that and I agree I even use little door all the time and that is a maiden I believe and certainly not a rider back but no one notices . I meant riders so my mistake as I just think potential buyers would be slightly put off if they were not riders and it would dent sales but I may well be wrong . Itís food for thought so will buy a few decks maiden bikes off Penguin and see . Thanks for the help guys Tarik 🙂

I just got a Penguin Marked deck in the mail today and my 10 year old son and 12 year old daughter, who had no idea it was a marked deck, noticed the marks almost instantly!! All I said was that I got a new type of Bicycle Deck with Maidens on the back instead of bike riders and they saw the clearly visible marks. I was actually quite amazed they saw them so quickly. Don't think I'll be using these in performance.

Why? Because someone who called attention to the backs of the cards got caught with the marks?

When the decks have glowing review everywhere else, likely by people who didn't pull a pack of cards out and say "look how these backs are different than the usual"?

I agree, not a fair test.
Yes, if you are looking for something you can find the marks. These decks have never claimed to have the most well concealed markings. Their strength is how easy they are to read, especially helpful for those with less than great eyesight like me.

They should've been focusing on the maidens, yet almost instantaneously noticed the marks. Not good enough for me. Sorry. I'll stick with my BW marked deck which has never been noticed.

I wanted riders anyway really so these being too obvious and maidens has swung them against me . I have great eyes again now as just paid thousands of pounds for refractive eye lense replacement to avoid glasses so all my rider marked decks with tiny marks I can see again anyway Tarik 🙂

Magicjack, how familiar with cards and magic in general are your children? (I'm not calling you out, I just think that they might have minds that work a little differently and be able to see things other people don't consider.) I've been using these cards for over a year and never been called out on them. My theater show has a projection screen ten feet wide over my head and these are shown to the audience for over an hour and no one has ever called them out. These even fly by magicians if you don't mention them. I've used them at a magic shop in Ohio for months, and no one cottoned onto the fact that I was using a marked deck until I started discussing an effect I was working on that relied on the marks. Two guys walked out of the room angry with themselves that even though they knew about the Maiden backs they never did the arithmetic and connected the previous effects had used marks.

One further thing I'll say is that I've blended rider back and mandolin into these and no one has ever said anything. I actually forgot that I had been using a mandolin joker in one of the Gen 1 decks that didn't have a joker, and only noticed it after using the deck in live performance after a week.

I keep seeing people comment on how visible the marks are, or being nervous about mixing visually similar gaffs, and I think it's the usual running without being chased. Maybe your audiences are more attentive than mine. I've just never had a bad experience with these cards, and they have saved me on a few occasions when I really messed up bad and needed extra information to still pull off a miracle. I think if you are working on a regular basis and doing magic for real people these are the absolute best investment you can make in your act, and regular use with them will put you at ease over the marks and back design.

Why would you not at least give them a chance especially since they are effective for so many?
How many magicians does it take to change a lightbulb? Regardless, for magicians darkness is a time for d'lite.

So a few points. The difference between Maiden and Riderback are very minimal. Iíve mixed Maiden and Rider backed cards and no one has noticed. This is including magicians. Using a Maiden back deck wonít look weird you your audience. And you can still use your gaffs as you like.

As for the markings, unless someone is purposely looking for markings, they wonít find it. I perform next to the biggest university in the US and this is my deck of choice. Iíve prob used them several hundred times and have never been busted. If you donít treat it like a marked deck and you treat it like a cheap deck, no will know. Heck I even make a joke about ďthese cards arenít marked rightĒ as I flip their card over to look at it directly. This does two things. If I needed a marked deck, why would I have to flip it over. And if the cards were marked, I would never tell them to look for the marks.

These cards get my highest recommendation.
