Hey everybody,
I'm going to be driving back to Arizona from Washington in a few days and I'm thinking about taking the 101 through Oregon and into California until just south of San Jose. I'll probably cut over to the I-5 right around there. Maybe even go as far east as the 99 through Fresno so I can skip L.A. entirely. I'm doing this route because I've never seen the redwoods and I like the idea of going over the Golden Gate Bridge and the Astoria-Megler Bridge. And just all the scenery really. I'm on a budget so I'm concerned about gas prices and gas availability on the 101 so I was wondering if any of you have experience with this drive and have any tips for me. Thanks in advance!

Best cross-country trip I ever took was driving from Boston to L.A. with a mad stripper. Five unforgettable days and nights via Route 66!

Why not drive through L.A? I could get you into the Magic Castle.
Seriously, I have driven down from north of San Francisco down PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) and that features beautiful landscapes and seascapes. Coming down the I-5 from the bay area is a long ugly drive featuring the hideous smell of cow pastures. (admittedly you will probably get far better gas mileage that way) Gas can be an issue on the ocean route, but just make it a point to look for signs to get off and fill up when you are down to about 1/3 tank and you'll be fine. have a great trip

Arthur! haha!
Cliff- I would love to go to the Magic Castle! Thank you for the offer, but I am flying up with a carry-on bag and driving back so I wouldn't have proper attire. Thanks for the gas tip! Laurie- I agree! John- Thanks!

That sounds like an awfully long road trip. I mean don’t know but it seems like thousands of miles across the USA to me. My wild guess is that you will need $500 for gas and a good sleeping bag.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Thanks Arthur!
I'm back! Had a great trip. Got to see the kids for 3 days and then spent 3 days driving back. I got to see a lot of things on my "bucket list" so it was pretty awesome. I drove across the Golden Gate Bridge and saw Redwoods. Those two things alone were great, but I also saw so much more. Thanks for the well wishes!
