Friend maven...No magician can "do" EFFECTS! EFFECTS are what the spectator PERCEIVES!!! Miracles take only as much time, as one takes to PERFORM them. I have 70 years of performing. 20 as a part time professional, and 50 as a full time professional. IT AINT W H A T YA DO, IT'S H O W YA DO IT.
Frankly, I am much more concerned with ENTERTAINING, than doing MIRACLES. (That's 'cuz MAGIC IS N O T INHERENTLY ENTERTAINING.) I subscribe to NATE LEIPZIG'S PHILOSOPHY. I don't perform in a social situation, unless I'm asked several times.

I have managed to secure a number of gigs from performing signed card to envelope (including my business card in with the chosen card). So I always carry a set up wallet. Seemingly impromptu.

I'm not much of a "card guy," but boy are packet tricks convenient for this kind of thing! I used to carry a haunted key with me at all times, but I kept losing the thing (drat that laundry pile!). My wallet, however, is a much more secure spot for "just in case" opportunities. There, I keep a B'wave and a set of traveler's ESP cards with a psionic.

I usually carry a pocket full of coins - (5 1/2 dollars, a sh**l, and a Chinese coin) I can do a STACK of effects with that. Sometimes I'll put a deck of cards in my pocket, or a packet if I'm working on something particular.

Don’t be “that guy” who walks around showing random people magic. Respect the art. It’s not always about you.

Bah, I've brightened many peoples day by interjecting magic into the interaction. How is the art respected by not showing it?
I have rubber bands on wrist, extreme burn and stand up monte in shirt pocket. When the moment arrives, the bands lead to burn which goes in pants then monte from the pocket. Then the money goes back in shirt pocket for the finish. Would like to know what "that guy" means in this context. |

OK: I'll refine that: *I* find it difficult not to come across as a bit of a jerk etc... YMMV. If you're a pro, then it's just what you do. It's kind of understood that you may have cards on you, say, or a bunch of dollar bills that turn into 100's. If you're a hobbyist, then you risk looking like someone prowling for a spectator. Ages ago, I decided to - more or less - never show magic unless someone asked. That means never saying, "Here, do you want to see a trick?" or never approaching strangers with an excuse to show them something. It means I do magic less, which is a shame, but I prefer it. (Close friends are exempt from this self-imposed rule, to their assorted pleasure or dismay.) An example: I was at a rather grand dinner recently, seated next to a friend who until that day had no idea I was a magician. Earlier he had a seen a presentation I had done which incorporated magic and he asked me about it. I told him it was a lifelong hobby and he asked to see something. EVEN THEN I would have felt it inappropriate to whip out the cards that I had in my pocket, but I DID have a couple of elastic bands in my pocket... It was all "organic" and fun. If I had gone into a bunch of card tricks I would have been showing off. Then the person on my right, who had been watching appreciatively, said something like. "That was fun. For a moment I thought you were gonna pull out a deck of cards!" So I'm not "that guy." But if you want be him, and think you can pull it off, go right ahead! |

If you have to ask who that guy is, then it is probably you.

Thanks for your response Ross. I know what you mean, as I am constantly asking my girlfriend not to "alert" possible spectators that I can "do" magic. She loves to show me off.
Having things ready actually got me started tho. A terrible accident had happened at her work. Everyone was sad and distracted. I entertained various crew members, (with permission) and the next week was hired for a benefit gig. As for Mindpro, I get how you respond to people. I've read and learned allot from your elite attitude and experience shared in a free forum from someone who has obviously succeeded. Your answer makes it hard for me not to respond with something like" thanks for nothing." Instead I ask with sincerity, what does "that guy" mean in this context, and what do you have against him? |

If you know any slight of hand, be sure to take it with you.

Magic is many things to many people. For some it's a living, some collect magic and never perform it, some like to create unexpected magic moments, some like to do a trick or two at a dinner party, some use it as an opening to meet new friends.
Each person gets to gauge for himself when it's appreciated and when it's not. If you enjoy the reaction you get don't worry about what some guy on a magic forum thinks. |

I have a couple of items on me at all times, a wand, silk and piece of rope for nice penetration routine (straight out of Tarbell, volume 8 if you're curious). Plus, rubber bands and few bits of paper or index card for a dynamite number trick. And if I'm going somewhere I "know" I'll present, then I'll also bring along a deck.
But, not long ago I went to a theatre to watch a magic show ... and before the show I was visiting with others waiting like me. A gentleman was there also and he proceeded to perform an entire "show" in what was essentially the lobby. That struck me as strange and little desperate on his part. I'm all for showing a trick or two to people I've just met, but to go to the lengths that guy did to perform, at someone else's venue I thought was a tad disrespectful. He even performed a signed card to envelope in wallet. Now "that's" not just something you happen to be carrying on your person. You have to prepare in advance with a pretty involved setup. Maybe it's just me, but impromptu performances are one thing ... and doing your entire close-up show at the drop of a hat (especially at another magician's show) is something else. Oscar |

I completely agree.
I saw someone do as much card magic as possible for whomever he could get to watch at a magic video shoot. He just kept going and going and going... Someone doing similar during a magic lecture including dropping his cards all over the floor. I think a key tip for all of us is learning when NOT to do magic. Otherwise we are just furthering the cliche.... No self awareness, not funny, not entertaining, stupid jokes, loud and inappropriate, caries around props for magic at a moments notice. If you want to carry around props for magic at a moments notice , fine. But no one should know you do, IMO.
