Hello! New to the site, so please excuse if this topic has been covered. It's regarding the Hot Rod Force, or any force where a spectator picks a number 1-6 (for example), and the magician forces a pre-determined selection onto the spectator. For those of you who know this force, I'm curious if it works successfully for you - especially in cases where the number selected does not easily land where you want it to. In my experience it's one that spectators see through pretty easily. Any thoughts? Has this worked for you? Any other tips or ideas on forcing a specific position, whether it's a Hot Rod or any other effect? Thanks so much for your feedback!

Have you tried just forcing a specific number?
Here's what I say... "Before I begin, I would like for you to relax and enjoy this moment. As you listen to the sound of my voice, bring all of your thoughts to the forefront of your mind and put them aside...now. Force yourself to believe in the impossible, forget all that you know and let your reality become one with mine. For this to work, please tell me a number between one and six." The spectator has heard the number four repeated throughout this script...yet in different words like forefront, before, force, forget and for. It hits pretty accurately and I then continue with the rest of the presentation. "Three" is the next number which people might name (meaning you can still get the force color). If folks are being difficult I will transition into the PATEO force and go from there. Hope this helps. Best Magical Regards, Mark Williams

One of the hidden concepts in "Clown Phobia" from The Wizards' Journal #30 is the Color Wheel Force, which I have also used to force a color for my home made Hot Rods. When I go table hopping, I like to bring along my collection of six home made Hot Rods, each one having a different color gem that can be chosen for the ending, so the "Six Force" just doesn't work for me. Instead, I use my Color Wheel Force to force the color that matches the Hot Rod I have chosen to use for that table. In Table Hopping, as many of you know, you sometimes collect a following from previous tables who try to catch your act a second or third time, so they are bamboozled when the Hot Rod turns all blue gems at one table, all yellow at another, all green at the next, and so on. In the trick "Clown Phobia" the color wheel is used to force which color silk handkerchief will be next to appear, and it's so simple to use, I let kids spin the wheel to choose the colors. So It is an all purpose device whenever there are colors in need of being selected. Just another solution to consider.

Thanks for the reminder, Jim
our more "graphically attuned" society might find this easier than counting to six I am thinking of reviewing ALL of the tricks offered on The Magic Nook and suggest others do also

Thanks so much for your suggestions and feedback - very helpful!
Love the "color wheel" idea, thank you Jim. Curious on the materials you used to build your own hot rods - especially the rod itself. What did you use? Great suggestion on pushing key words out to create a mental "force" Mark. I will definitely use that. Open to any other thoughts out there as well. Thanks again!! |

When I choose my spec carefully, this is almost foolproof:
"Each color represents a different personality type, pick the one that most attracts you: white for neutral, green for jealous, red for angry, blue for loving, orange for cunning, pink for studious." Can you guess what color my hotrod is?

Maybe, you feel comfortable with this approach: "I am not asking for a colour straight away, because it is psychologically proven that most people consistently choose some colours over others - but I want your choice to be as random as possible, so we'll choose a colour way more fairly. I have here six glass pearls/gemstones/coloured pieces of paper/bottle caps/>>insert any other item that you can get in six different colours<<. I choose three of them and of those three you decide on two that we get rid of." This is what's called a Pateo-force (well, it's actually a slightly modified version of a Pateo-force, but you'll get the idea) - look it up here on the Café if that is a concept that you are not familiar with. "Ok, now you choose three items and I decide which two we get rid of." In only two "strikes", you get rid of four items. Use equivoque/magicians choice to force the colour you want out of the last two items. For me that is fast enough and it still feels fair. Hope this helps!

I carry a Hot Rod in my purse, but rarely use it. The force I use is easy and woks every time. I have them pick a number, 1-6 (or one through six). I can then use a counting technique to force any color I want, with two variables: (1) which end of the Hot Rod I start counting on, and (1) whether I count numbers (1, 2, 3...) or letters (one, two, three...). Using those variables, I can take whatever number they choose, and get it to fall on whatever color I want it to. Try it.

The force is perfect for the row of eggs in an egg carton.
