An hour or so ago, a Roydon/Klosterman VENTURE III Psychic Table, as pictured at the head of this topic, sold at auction for $1920.00 including the 20% Buyer's Premium. During the same Potter and Potter Jeff Busby Collection auction, Lot 120, an "Important archive of Dai Vernon - Faucett Ross Letters" sold for a piddling $51,660.00.

Very exciting. I was honored to get to spend a weekend in Salon de Magie last October. Amazing that Ken is involved in the history of an item like this. Terrific stuff!

Wow! What an interesting topic! The "Roydon's Psychic Table" has always made me dream since I saw the announcement (by Venture III) in "Seance". I wanted to buy it when it was proposed by Steven's Magic not so long ago. But I did not do it because of some financial problems.
Do you know how many tables have been made for Steven Magic? Finally, how many tables have been made in all? So indeed, today with technology there are tables that produce the same effect, but still, I prefer the "Roydon's Psychic Table". I like mechanical effects.

Five of them were built for Venture III plus one more for Ken Klosterman in the guise of a game table. The five for retail sold and one of those was reportedly smashed to bits by a disgruntled wealthy owner in Europe. So that leaves four by Venture III. I have one and at least two more have been accounted for in the above posts. Stevens Magic had a few built with a different exterior look. Sebastian Black had or may still have one of the Stevens' tables for sale. Do you still have the "Seance" issue and/or whatever you read from Stevens that mentioned the Roydon table or advertised it? If so, I'd really appreciate a photo copy of them. Please PM me if you like.

I would not say that the table has in any way been Outclassed, by anything using Modern Technology.
Best Thoughts, SB

Harry Roydon's Psychic Table...very cool and clever indeed! Truly ingenious concept.
There are high-tech and low-tech ways to acquire the sitter's information. At the time this table was invented, it must have been perceived as high-tech. Or at least highly innovative use of existing technology. It's fascinating how concepts and methods have - and continue to evolve. Not only through the use of physical or mechanical props or devices, but in other ways too, such as linguistic or psychological approaches. |
