If you use Mac OSX, you can save pretty much out of any program (word, textedit, quark, photoshop etc.) as a .pdf - it's basic capability built into the operating system.
Yet another reason to use macs. |

If you don't have OS X, you could email a Word file (or rtf or whatever) to a friend with OS X, who can then print it to pdf and email it back to you.

The gold standard is, of course, Adobe Acrobat. It does a really fine job of creating PDF. There are also several much less expensive tools out there. Try a good shareware site like Tucows, or an open source repository like SourceForge.

If you're short on cash, I recommend Ghostscript. It's not as easy to use as Adobe software, but it's free and generates very nice looking pdf files.
You can get it here: http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/doc/AFPL/get814.htm There are two steps involved in creating a pdf with Ghostscript. First, you print the document to a file format called “postscript”. The second step is to open that postscript file in GSview and use the built-in pdf conversion utility. If your needs aren’t very demanding, there is also a website that can do the postscript-to-pdf conversion online. All you have to do is upload a postscript file and the utility will convert it to a pdf that you can download. Here’s the site: http://www.ps2pdf.com/convert/convert.htm Don’t know how to create postscript files? Here's how to set up your machine. Install a postscript printer driver using the "Add Printer" wizard. The wizard will prompt you to select a printer port. In "Use the following port:", pick the one that says "FILE:" and click "Next". Under "Manufacturer", pick "HP". Under "Printers", pick "HP Color LaserJet 5/5M PS". Click "Next" and then answer any remaining prompts to complete the wizard. Your computer is now “postscript enabled”. As an example, let’s say that you want to save a Microsoft Word document to postscript: 1) First, open the document in Word, and print it to a file. You do this by clicking File|Print. 2) Change the printer to "HP Color LaserJet 5/5M PS” and click OK. 3) You will be prompted to name the file. Enter the name with an extension of “.ps” so the system will recognize it as a postscript file. 4) Click OK to save the file. Depending on the size of your document and the speed of your machine, this part could take a while. The resulting postscript (.ps) file can thereafter be converted to pdf via the online conversion service I mentioned earlier. On the other hand, if you have Ghostscript and GSview installed on your machine, you can open the .ps file in GSview and use “pdfwrite” in the File|Convert utility to do the same thing. |

What is required for online transactions, so the e-book can sell itself without your direct interaction?

I prefer to write my interactive e-books in a web page creator like Frontpage and then convert it to an e-book using one of the cheaper programs. This way the book operates like a website on the persons computer, allowing them to make choices. However, if you do not go interactive any PDF will probably do as long as security is not your issue.

Hi Steve,
Paypal has a new slick automatic delivery system that might work for you. If you want something more comprehensive http://www.digibuy.com is fantastic. I've personally used them with great success. They literally handle everything. You receive a check twice a month. Although neither solution does anything about security (theft and sharing). |

Be careful of the e-book programs you buy. They are not all equal.
