In my opinion, I would say put all magic and mentalism on hold for a year...(if you're serious about it)...
then start from the beginning... read ALL your Holmes books, watch the shows, then watch shows like Lie To Me and the guy he was based on (Ekman) read up on the basics of modern psychology and philosophy too... if you're wanting to perform socially then you can wing it with wiki-research, but if you are aiming for some kind of gigging thing (whether its local, lowkey or something else) - then I would say you need to be knowledgeable about the ideas surrounding deduction... so you could read books like The Blue Sense, and books about the police and private detectives... make notes, try to apply it on a daily basis, "deduce" as you go about your business, just in your head at first, expand your vocabulary and start looking into giving speeches, acting classes and so on... I say all this because you will meet people who do genuinely know their stuff, and it only takes one hard question and your back-end will go, and your entire premise crumbles... there's also loads of statistical research sites out there... whilst you're doing that, buy Elliott bressler's Switchcraft, and just focus on b*ll*t work during that year too (you'll get a load of routines within the ebook too, so you wont get bored)... that's my view... I think too much of all the mentalism related stuff will cloud your judgement, and muddy the pitch you want to play on...plenty of time to do that... also, the holmes/deduction side of things has been done many times before throughout the decades, so also keep an eye out on an unusual angle to explore... as you go along, keep notes, the things you love, the things you find interesting, break them down, then when you do shift to the mentalism side of things, you have points of reference to then tinker with and adapt, all based on real things...

Btw - once you start digging into the older mentalism booklets, there's a strong strain of them that include a mini-lecture as part of the programme, I would have thought that would be ideal for someone who deduces things...hook them in with examples, go from there... I think if I did it, I'd also look at the trappings...
a notepad to keep track of your subject maybe a telescopic pointer if on stage to point out what you noticed the classic magnifying glass as many will identify it naturally...which could also be used as a pendulum if on a chain... that kind of thing...

@ Mr Woolery, thanks for making the distinction...yes, "moments of wonder" were exactly what I meant to imply (not stock lines). What I've been doing, is tarot readings where I read the cards before we turn them over, and then reading the cards further after the turn (the cards are ma##ed). I don't even talk about what's going on or why I'm doing it, I just use body language to imply that I'm getting an impression of the card and give a brief read.
I guess I'm curious about your opinion over whether or not moments of wonder detract too much from a reading? |

By moments of wonder, I mean totally apart from the readings. I really do the readings as a "shut eye." But magic tricks or mental magic could be free.

Hey hollywoo, I'm really curious where your imagination has gone with this concept. Sup?

Some interesting ideas and resources in this thread. I also recommend Cassidy'S Fundamentals book as well as his Art of Mentalism books

If you're into this kind of thing and reading what you like, methods using logic will soon be appealing to you as an "out", and a character like the one you want to play hides those methods naturally with presentation. Something to think about.

A hooking plot can be used. For example a way person handle his/her wallet tells a lot about their profession. So peek wallet with information and the way they hand the wallet to you can tell you their job, their city, stuff like this. Hope what I’m trying to say makes sense

I found Richard Tenance's S.H.A.R.E (The Sherlock Holmes Approach To Reading Everyone) quite insightful

Might want to watch some Colin Cloud, I believe he uses a similar Holmesian "approach" in his work
