Hi guys, I am looking for some plans on how to build and out door dove aviary. I have watched a Tony Clark video, and he shows one briefly, but not in depth. Does anyone have or know where to get any plans or more information? I was also wondering, how many doves an aviary can hold, and the ratio of square feet per dove? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Beaudini

Hi Beaudini: There are many variations on dove aviaries. I started out with a very large outdoor cage meant for Rabbits. I just put a solid floor in it for sand and installed some perches. It all depends on how many birds you want to keep. I have a set of plans for the one I made and use. It will give you an idea of what you need and it can be modified to suit your needs. If you send me a private message with your address, I'd be glad to send you a copy. Also, if you want to build a large one, Amos Levkovitch has two video's out that are great. One is titled "Dove Tails" and explains care, training and building an aviary. The other one "Just Do It" deals with actual performance and the how to's of dove magic.

Beau, look up Amos on youtube. He has some video footage of the aviary just to give you an idea of what his looks like, and of course, from there do as Dave suggest, get the video on dove care and handling. Frewin has some footage on his 3 course series as well.
Check into Dave’s Drawing as well he knows what’s up. If you are carpenter savvy then just get creative, that's what I did with my aviary. Just moved my kids back outside this morning, they are loving their new digs and all are vying for nest right now. My Aviary is also surrounded by lattice work to help provide shading, and the Morning glories are starting to break ground and soon will be climbing the lattice work to help provide coverage in the heat. Once you see these designs, get creative and most of all, HAVE FUN doing it. Today is my day to watch them all settle in to there new aviary. Dave Owln is excited for tomorrow, once all are settled in, we will send pictures to you my friend. Beau, hope you get tons of designs from these guys and we wish you the best for you and your feathered friends. Also keep in mind when building to provide for predators and to keep them out. Posted: Apr 13, 2011 11:48pm Beau, I apologize. It appears Amos has pulled the video of the Aviary. Some good information though at http://www.traineddoves.com. Over the years I have had several good aviaries. The sizes have ranged from 4x6 feet to 12'x36'.
Points I really recommend: 1. Concrete floor. 2. All of the building is tall enough for your to stand up inside. (However, you want no part of it you can't reach standing or kneeling on the floor. Doves like to perch high!) 3. No gaps larger than 1/2" x 1". (Rats and snakes like doves!) 4. A real door! It can be wire if framed. 5. A water faucet inside the aviary. 6. A handy electrical outlet for lights, shop vac, etc. 7. A top so strong that you can walk on it! 8. Good dry storage outside the aviary for feed, carrying cages, etc. 9. A dishpan of sand on the floor (The doves' beach!) 10. Access to sunlight. (Do have more shady area than space in direct sun.) Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |
