I am trying to learn the second level routine in Michael Ammars Cups and Balls book. It seems too complex, also the ball is in one hand, then in the other without the move being explained. Help please?

Buy the video!
Take the book with you when you go to the coffee shop or when you're on the bus away from your VCR so that you can read up and think about the cups and balls. But to see how things are supposed to look, invest $30 on the video. |

Sometimes if it is in the left and then the right, there is no move. Just toss the ball into the right, look the specs in the eyes and casually do a false transfer to the left (but don't say I will put the ball into the left ) say "I give the ball a little squeeze," while false transfering and then squeezing the left hand and then tap the hand with the wand and say it has vanished.
If you want to vanish the balls without the extra back and forth, you have to learn the advanced wand vanishes. I can only do the striking vanish and the through the hand vanish right now, so at least I only have do the extra back and forth once. I ended up getting the second DVD and the book, and it does help to see the routine.

Hi,
I've got the book in front of me - which page/picture are you asking about ? Some of the moves in the book are not very well explained but this routine is pretty straightforward. By-the-way, I disagree with some of the above posts that recomend buying a video to explain a book. Eddie |

I think the only place in the routine where a ball goes from one hand to the other without explanation is when you pick up a cup with your right hand (to secretly load the ball underneath) and toss the ball on top to the left hand. It is then said to false transfer it from right to left and retained in the right. He tells how to false transfer the ball but doesn't say what to do to get it to the right. My point was you just openly toss it from left to right. I remember thinking the same thing when I first read it.
I agree that you shouldn't need to buy the DVD. It covers what is in the book. But like everything else, it is nice to see the routine. Not needed, agreed, but the C&Bs is a complex and visual routine filled with subtlety and misdirection and many newer magicians have not seen it performed and therefore have very little visual sense of how things look. I picked up both the book and one of the DVDs for 45 dollars, close to brand new, at an auction so I figured it was worth it.

Hi again,
First off, flooglestreet I'm not being patronising but the only way to learn any routine is to break it down into its component phases and learn each one and then join them together. In this case 1 - put down the cups, loading them. 2 - vanishing the ball 3 times and reproducing it each time under another cup. 3 - producing 3 balls 4 - eliminating the balls and reloading the cups at the same time. The various moves seem to be covered ealier in the book, but it might be worth while to jump forward to the beginning of the Vernon routine to see how that works. I still cannot find a difficulty in this routine except that it relies too much on the photo's and has little text. The bottom right photo on page 32 shows the cup in the other hand.Is this what is causing the confusion ? He changes the hand which lifts the cups on the next page too. In this phase ( 2 above ) I use the dirty hand to lift the cup, and work right to left, rather that left to right as M.A. does. Since you know the object of each phase you can work out your own handling. You need not do it exactly as in the book. Hope this helps, and not complicate things! Eddie |
