So I'm watching HBO boxing and a stange thing happens.

It is announced 12 round fight off Smith vs. Barrera. Round 10 comes along and the ref tells them last round. The announcers are confused and say "make no mistake this is a 12 round fight". Well it firms out the promoters agreed to a 10 round fight last minute.

Never saw that before.

The only thing I have seen like that is rather the opposite; sportsmen thinking, it’s all over. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPV6exMUmUs

Great video. That happens occasionally in American Football where the play was never whistled dead and someone grabs the ball and runs with it.

As for the boxing match, I think if I had paid to see a 12 round fight and they changed it to 10 at the last minute, I would not be happy about that. Was there a reason to call it there - like a KO or TKO that would justify the end if the promoters had not shortened it?

I wonder if that happens often. I used to watch some boxing back when HBO only had one channel but I prefer MMA nowadays. The two don't really compare in my opinion except for the fact that 2 people are beating the tar out of each other.

Not a TKO, just promoters agreed is all.

It's happened the other way in boxing as well.

Years ago Leon Spinks was trying to mount a comeback of sorts. He got a match with a fighter named Eddie Curry. They would have fixed the fight but figured it wasn't necessary because Curry usually got knocked out early. The fight was scheduled for 8 rounds. Lo and Behold, not only does Curry go the full 8 rounds, he outboxes Spinks, is way ahead on all the scorecards, and wins a Unanimous Decision. The decision is announced in the ring. So much for the comeback.

But wait!!

Suddenly Spinks manager, who was a fight fixer, jumps in the ring and announces to the surprise of Curry and his team that this is, in fact, a 10 round fight. And tells both corners the 9th round begins in one minute. Currys manager, a commissioner who had "worked" with Spinks manager in the past (and was later convicted of sports bribery and conspiracy in a separate case), tells the cornermen to get the gloves back on Curry, there are two rounds left. But Curry says "Screw that".

Now Spinks manager talks to Currys people and tells them he has to have this win. Currys people say "Fine, but let's take care of this in back". Everyone leaves the ring, they work it out, and the fight goes down in the books as a disqualification for Curry because he refused to come out for the 9th round. Of a scheduled 8 round bout.

For more on the jaw-dropping Leon Spinks - Eddie Curry fight, check out "The Bittersweet Science: Fifteen Writers in The Corner, in The Gym, and at Ringside," available at Amazon for under $15. Great collection of boxing essays, including Charles Farrell's "Why I Fixed Fights."

We were raised in King Edwards Place in Birmingham right opposite Bingly Hall, which hosted many big fights and we were bookmakers. My Grandfather was a leading bookie and his sons my uncles were experts in sports of one sort or another. One uncle was an expert on boxing and knew everybody in that game worth knowing and so we had inside info. It was a different world then, with no TV or sponsorship like now and the money essentially came from live ticket sales only. So, comparatively speaking, the big money in the game was in the betting back then. In any case, the boxers and promoters then would often be at my grandfather’s wheeling and dealing. It is cleaner today because the betting money is comparatively small fry, I think. I mean I don’t know, I have lost touch with boxing. Many of our old boxers went into bookmaking when it became legal here and into the stock market also. They became like Las Vegas; faceless corporations.
