I'm designing new business cards for myself
and I am interested in making something that are keepers. Hopefully the prospective client will keep the card because it's "cool". I'm looking for ideas. I had a few but maybe yours' are better. A). S.A.M. Used to put a magic trick on the back of their membership cards "Between the 2 and 10 of diamonds" It's a very nice card trick using the membership card. The problem is I have to provide the user with a tutorial. B). Put a good optical illusion on the back. Such as a sketch of Marilyn Monroe that changes to Albert Einstein when turned upside down. There are many illusions available. C) Make a stack of business cards that works like a Svengali deck. I can ask the printer to give me a bunch of blank business cards to match my order. I can then trim to make the stack. I'll Riffle and show all blank cards and ask them to pick one. It's my printed business card. Does anyone have any other thoughts? Thanks.

Go to Lybrary.com and look up First Impressions by Michael Paul. It's a $20 investment but it may be what your looking for.

When I searched "magic business card", I got a lot of hits and a lot of ideas. One idea is to apply rough & smooth spray on the printed sides and fan a stack to show all blanks on both sides. Have them point to a blank card. When I remove it, they see my business card. Decisions, decisions!

Qua-Fiki's Matrix-Mix from The Wizards' Journal #23 makes use of business cards that you print up yourself on your computer printer.

Couple of thoughts...
Think about card misprints that allow you to give out a card that permanently altered from its original state. For example, a card with all the words of the card scrambled and shoved to one end. What the audience sees is you show a normal card, tap its end on the table and all the words have fallen to the lower edge. Greg Wilson has a similar misprint in his Revolution deck spin gimmick - a card is printed as though centrifugal force from the spin splattered the words over to the edges of the card. Eric Moren had a great quickie where his cards didn't have phone number on it. He says the printer screwed up and he'll fix it...and he holds the card about a 12 inches away from his pen he's holding and supposedly writes in his number on the card from a foot away. In the same vein is doing a trick that leaves the card altered magically. A long time ago, I sold the rights to Magic Smith to put out "Stockholder", a business card case that let you do Out To Lunch-based effects with your business cards. Greg Wilson and I put together the book that came with it with both original material as well as some great contributions contributions from guys like Michael Weber. If you can still find one - or the just the booklet that came with the wallet (most of the material could be done with just a stack of cards with a rubber band around them), there is a lot of material in there that create "Keeper" cards. By the way, I'm not huckstering the product - I don't make anything from it - I just know there was some great material with it. And of course, a lot of things in print done with index/playing cards and the OTL principle can be adapted to business cards, like Daryl's terrific effect with a sharpie that writes in black and words he writes change into 3 different colors. |

Thanks for your suggestions.
These are some good ideas for business card magic tricks. Since I'm now designing my new business cards, I'm actually looking for a trick that has something preprinted on on the "business cards" that will encourage the spectator to keep it. Perhaps an easy trick that he/she can perform themselves. I like the OTL idea but it is more of a souvenir keeper. I tried to find Stockholder but it's out of stock in the places I checked.

An optical illusion? An ambigram?
It's still magic even if you know how it's done.

Some variation of "Out to Lunch." Mark Wilson has some in his Complete Course in Magic.

Had one made in trade for a Show - one side said 'have show will travel' plus contact information - the other side had a picture of my Wife and self with the Head Chopper( wife looking up at me while I held the blade and the chopper open - also repainted the whole chopper a hammered Gold with smudges around the neck hole). Got a few gigs. Ralph
