"Philter" - A new card mentalism routine from Ben Blau (Coming Soon)

Features:

*100% impromptu

*Any complete deck of cards can be used.

*The cards can be shuffled in any manner before starting the routine.

*Two spectators think of cards while the performer's back is turned.

*The performer turns back around to face his participants, and asks each of them two questions about their cards. The participants get to decide whether to answer these questions truthfully, or lie in their responses.

*The performer genuinely doesn't know what combination of truth/lie responses he will get, and even both participants can answer the questions in the same way.

*Despite these seemingly impossible conditions, the performer is able to unfailingly divine both cards being thought-of with no further questioning or fishing!

This is easy to do, requires no reset, and can be done any time a deck of cards is available. It can also be done with a symbol deck, such as the Zeneration-X deck.

More to come...

I have seen this first hand and can attest it is all Ben claims it is. This is a wonderful effect.

That's great news Ben. Seems like you had a very creative and productive summer. I'm excited about this and looking forward to the release.

I'm currently struggling with the idea of a demo video for the first time.

I'm going to do my best to film a demo as soon as possible. The one thing that concerns me is that I am hesitant to releasing the demo footage for promotional purposes. Learned and well-read magicians could potentially decipher the method, and appropriate the effect for themselves without purchasing it. Therefore, I'm probably going to shoot a demo video and curate a group of people with whom I will share it. I'll then rely on their testimonials to help promote the effect. Normally, I release unedited promo footage in its entirety, because I think that's honest. In this particular case, however, that could undermine sales and promote exposure. I plan to be open about my decision not to release promo footage, and hope that potential customers understand that the value in this routine is a novel combination of principles that even though they might recognize, it's a routine that is not necessarily designed to fool magicians (although it likely will), but to devastate lay audiences.

I'm really torn about this, because my normal inclination would be to release promo footage. In fact, I think this routine is so good that I would want to release the footage for vanity alone. But in this case, I think it might be too risky.

I hope that by now, people will trust that I don't release junk. I firmly believe this is something you will use for the rest of your life, especially if you enjoy my particular approach to creating routines. I also hope that potential customers forgive me for my hesidency to release performance footage in this case. I promise I'm not withholding it for unscrupulous reasons.

Hi All,

Ben shared this with me and, like all his other releases, "Philter" is a unique combination of principles and very clever thinking. Ben added one aspect to the original routine I saw that will allow you to reveal details about the volunteers' selections that seem impossible to know... it was a brilliant insight on his part. Promo video or not, Philter is another excellent creation from Ben.

Sounds fascinating, Ben.
However, reading the description step by step one might wonder at what point of the routine actual cards are required at all? This implies that quite a bit of the handling has been withheld yet.

Like other routines from Ben, this routine combines several clever principles to achieve an ingenious routine. I think this is a great impromptu piece with cards that would seem impossible. I will be using this!

I like this a lot. Exactly the kind of material that I have come to expect from Ben, extremely deceptive and clearly taught with attention to detail.

Yes, the performer touches the cards in this routine. There are scripted reasons for him to do so. However, the participants ultimately get to shuffle them before and after making their selections, all while the performer's back is turned.

Hope that helps.

As soon as I can set up a filming schedule with the videographers, and get it all properly filmed. Shouldn't take too long, I hope.

Some additional thought has resulted in me thinking of a way that I could potentially publish a demo performance. I'd have to modify the routine slightly in order to do so, but the effect will be the same. If a demo video is really important to everyone, I'll do my best to provide one (even though it won't be EXACTLY the same as what I'll be teaching in the video download). The modified version of the routine can be reserved for when you absolutely need to fool magicians, so it will probably also be taught as an option.

Why not just show reactions and talk a little about how great the effect is without actually showing a performance? I mean, it seems to work for E...

I'm mostly kidding. Ben, your reputation is such that many here will likely purchase without that demo. Once it's available I trust you'll have no problem gathering testimonials.

Yeah, I get it. But only showing reaction shots and edited footage just isn't me. Either I will shoot a fair demo video of a "version" of the routine that is designed to fool magicians, or I'll opt to shoot no demo video at all. It depends on how I feel about the likelihood of being ripped off once the "magician-fooler" version is filmed.

Reads good, but I fear a large amount of process in the method. I’ll be more than happy to be proved wrong and I’m looking forward to the demo that fools magicians.

If you're familiar with my work, you're probably aware that I don't shy away from "process". I work very hard at scripting and blocking to make all procedural steps seem motivated and logical. This routine has a commensurate amount of process as most of my other popular pieces. If you're not familiar with my work at all, please visit the website in my signature. There are several performance videos there.

Hope that helps,

Ben
