It is with heavy hearts that we, friends of Eugene Burger, inform you that Eugene has passed away in Chicago at the age of 78.
Eugene enjoyed a long, healthy life, but was very recently diagnosed with terminal cancer. Even so, his death today came more quickly than expected, and we are deeply shocked and saddened by his loss.

We know that in the days, weeks, and months ahead, countless things will be written and said about Eugene, and we will share more information, too. But for now we want to tell you that Eugene embraced his situation with great clarity, humor, and peace of mind. As he said one day, "Now I am on the way to the ultimate capital M Mystery of life."

Please join us in remembering and celebrating Eugene, a rare and wonderful person who has meant so much to us and to magicians all over the world.

RIP Eugene

Eugene was more than a magician. He was a beautiful soul. And he changed my life. I am beyond sad right now.

What a marvelous magician, writer, teacher, philosopher of magic, and friend. As a close-up performer, especially in engaging the spectators, he was marvelous.

His loss to us is immense, but his legacy is much greater than our loss, and his greatest books will still be formational a century from now. If any readers of this thread want to read something in his honor, begin perhaps with Mastering the Art of Magic.

So sad to hear of this. I always enjoyed talking about this business with Eugene and his lifetime of knowledge about the art and business we love. Such a gentle and kind soul that was touched by everyone that met him. He'd leave a lasting impression and impact in a very soft and subtle way. RIP my friend.

He was one of the greats. His deep signs and incredible demeanor placed him in a class by himself.
God speed, Eugene!

The magic world is running low on heroes lately. Some folks are going to have to step up the game to fill those shoes.

While I never spoke to Eugene personally, he was definitely a massive inspiration from the time that I started taking magic seriously on. I recall listening to his interviews over and over just to hear the wisdom in that voice.

With him gone a whole era - the magic in the bar.
He was familiar with the great bar magicians of the early 20th century.
He was a profound thinker, with a fine sense of humor. His magic was beautiful!
We grieve!
I love the magic & history of magic! My favorites magicians - Dai Vernon, Max Malini, Fielding West, Michael Finney, Jeff Hobson, Bob Sheets, Nick Lewin, Harry Murphy, Dick Oslund- great showmen of magic!
