Eugene had a profound effect on my art both through his writings and his lectures.

I didn't know him well. But I remember him speaking at a MindVention lecture. He stood there looking out at the audience of mentalists...and he said "A magician lecturing to mentalists. Hmmm. Now I know how a juggler feels at a magic convention." In that instant he won my heart.
Great respect for his life's work and brilliant thinking. He will be missed. David

It was always a joy to watch him perform. He showed us a different way of presenting magic. A hugely important and influential figure for a generation of magicians. His books, articles and essays will ensure his legacy continues to reach future generations. Sad to hear of his death.

Many of you met him in person, some of you were even very close. I'm so sorry for your loss.
Luckily, his thoughts and words will remain with us. |

I never met Eugene. In fact, the only material I have of his is a small booklet that was given to me, many, many years ago. In it, Eugene recommends picking six or seven of you very best effects, then honing them to perfection, rather than constantly changing your close-up show. It was advice that I took to heart when I started developing a close-up show of my own. It was great advice then and it is great advice now. It's strange, yet wonderful how someone I hardly knew impacted my career so importantly. Eugene will leave a void in the performing arts that will never be filled. Few will ever reach the level of talent and wisdom that Eugene attained. I pray that he is at peace and resting in the loving arms of our Father. Farewell, sir. You will be sorely missed.

I'm taking this loss very hard. Eugene is the most important mentor I've ever had. I loved him dearly for so many reasons. There was simply no one else like him in the entire landscape of magic. I doubt there ever will be. His range as a performer was astounding. His viewpoints concerning life, death, meaning, mystery, and magic were deeper and more well-considered than anyone else in the field. His books are among my most cherished possessions. The time I got to spend with him in "real life" ranks as the best time I ever had, outside of my wedding day.
His absence will be painfully felt every day for the rest of my life. I love you, Eugene Burger. Thank you for changing my life.

One of the few people I have heard referred to and to whom I would refer to as a philosopher of magic. It seems he may have had so much more to teach.
RIP Eugene

A breathtaking performer and a wonderful human being.
The first lecture I ever saw in person was Eugene's - I didn't have the knowledge or maturity at the time to fully appreciate who was sitting in front of me, but I am honored to have had that fleeting moment with him. For those, like myself, who didn't have the honor of knowing Eugene, remember the late Bob Cassidy's words: "As I reviewed the [39 Steps], I was struck by an amazing realization - all of the authors are still alive! They still live between the covers of their books and will happily talk or argue with you anytime you'd like to visit them. Their immortality is conditional, however. It will last only as long as their books are read" |
