I'm thinking about doing a strait jacket escape in a magic contest.
Will the judges consider this "magic"? I have always thought that "magic" was something that defies the laws of science ie: object disappears, reappears, changes shape, penetrates something, levitates etc. In a strait jacket escape there is nothing "magic" about, everyone sees exactly what you are doing, but it is entertaining. Jade does a thumb tie routine that does appear "magic" because the hoops magically penetrate the ties and her arms. But a strait jacket, hmm, your thoughts about this. Thanks. |

Escape is not magic per se, but it is in my mind an "Allied Art." I think your answer lies in who is putting on the contest. If it is any kind of magic club or group, Houdini was a magican first (king of cards) then an escapologist) that should be fine. If it is a community center, I would ask the people running it if they are OK with it.
In my personal experience, many people call me a magician, even when I am doing a show of escapes.
Magic is like Science,
Both are fun if you do it right! |

Thanks for your input. I'm glade Houdini wasn't a juggler too!

Yes, it is, without any doubt. There's a qualifying statement, though. Escapes are one of the most ancient skill-sets. Most EAs don't have that context.

I doubt you'll ever win a "Magic contest" with any escape...much less, a strait-jacket escape.
The Magic die-hards/historians consider Houdini nothing more than a bubbler of magic, and/or a stuntman. Play the politics game, and do a traditional magic act - if you want to be in the running for a prize. |

Check out the act that won the Mid-West Jubilee last month (comedy rope tie escape). But I will heed your advice. Thanks. |

I'm not a Houdini fan, but he was a greater stunt-man than most of the EAs I've seen.

Escape imo are more in the stunt category. Never the less that can and do aid the magician/mentalist in gaining publicity. That's how Houdini was able to become the most recognized magician in the world and gained the reputation as "The Man Who walks Through Walls". If you want almost immediate publicity, DO A STUNT.

BEWARE these Debbie downers and anything they say. They simply lack the self esteem or good will, to be positive or productive. Your belief in self, is more important and is all that matters, for your success to be glorious. |
