Hi
I'm looking for a suitable egg for an egg bag routine using a Malini style bag. I currently have solid rubber and wooden eggs, however I find both too heavy for some of the sleights involved, as too is a real egg. I have considered using blown eggs, but am worried these are too fragile. I recently came across the Plastic Eggs by Donato Colucci, and wondered if these may be the answer, however I note in the description that these take a load. I am not sure how they are loaded (screw together, hole in the back aka silk in egg etc),but do worry that the loadability (is that even a word?) may compromise the naturalness of the eggs when I hand these out for examination at the start of the routine (note how I resisted the urge to say eggs-amination - doh!). Is anyone her on the Café familiar with this set who could advise re. the suitability/general look and feel? I have tried enquiring with Alakazam Magic who stock these, however they ship their product directly from their warehouse and are as such unable to comment as no one in heir office has hands on experience. A link to the product can be found here: https://www.alakazam.co.uk/product-high-......wht.html This sounded like the best forum to post in, but please do let me know if you feel a different forum may be more productive. Many thanks Simon |

Simon the best fake egg you can get is from Jeff Hobson. http://www.hobsonschoicemagic.com/ price is reasonable and quality is perfect.
Good Luck

Hi, thanks for that. Unfortunately I am based in the UK so am worried postage may be prohibitive (couldn't see on the site if there is international shipping). I don't suppose you know if Jeff sells via any UK outlets?
Many thanks Simon |

Real blown eggs work fine. Coat them with a lacquer and that hardens them up some. Always carry an extra egg for the smart ass that cracks them on a surface - yes that happened to me!
I also have Jeff Hobson's eggs - they are great, but blowing eggs is cheap, just takes some lungs! Hudson |

Thanks Hudson, I will give that a try. Was actually more worried about me cracking the eggs in a jacket pocket than the spec's, but given your comments I'll give blown eggs a shot.
Actually started looking for a ceramic egg but without success as I figured they would be more durable, although did see Francis Menotti do an egg bag routine on his Treachery of Tricks DVD where he managed to break a ceramic one too (he very ably worked around this set-back)! |

I worked on an egg farm for a few years through my high school and college days and I can tell you there is a huge difference in shell hardness from one egg to another. Unfortunately it's not necessarily obvious by looking at them. First, the smaller eggs are likely to have a thicker/harder shell. Also look for a smooth as possible shell. Young hens will lay smaller, thicker shelled eggs but then over time the shells will get thinner and more porous. Once they shells get too fragile that they become too difficult to process they force the hens into molting where they quit laying. Once they start laying again the eggs are still larger but the shells are much stronger again. If you use a smaller egg it's more likely from a younger hen and you'll have a better chance of a stronger shell.

Simon,
I have cracked a couple of eggs, but not many. I took an afternoon and blew a dozen eggs and the coated them with some lacquer that I got at an art store. I always carry a spare with me and keep the eggs in one of those camping containers. (Yellow egg containers for backpackers. They come in 2-egg, 6-egg, and 12-egg containers.). Even when I had a kid crack my egg, I was still able to complete the routine, the egg just had a crack in it. Tossed it after that show. Another time I cruhshed one of my eggs in my brief case. That's when I went to the backpacking containers. No trouble since then. Good luck! Hudson |

Thanks Brian/Hudson. The advice re. egg selection is invaluable (who'd have thought we'd have an egg expert in a magic forum:-) Hadn't occurred to me to use a camping container, great idea (no idea why I didn't think of that myself, so simple)!!
The Café really is an invaluable resource☺ |

I've been questioned and have had remarks about how light the hollowed eggs are. I tell them that it's because they are not chicken eggs, they're duck eggs. No one has ever questioned it.

You don't have to blow the eggs. You can use meat injector to suck out the eggs. Them fill the syringe with water to rinse out the egg real well. Look online for using modge podge to strengthen blown eggs. That's what ladies that decorate the eggs use. Good luck.

There are several DIY youtube videos with several different ways to make your own "blown eggs" and the super inexpensive supplies to make it simpler. There is also a very good video lecture on Aaron Fishers Conjuring Community that teaches you how, goes over a couple alternatives (IIRC) and teaches a nice routine. I tried out the Conjuring Community on a one month trial and even though there wasn't a lot for me (to keep a monthly subscription) there are some really great classes (live lecture type with multiple "pros" input) on a ton of great subjects. Here is a link to it. Also, if you are on his email list, there are special offers from time to time. http://conjuror.community/

I've used blown eggs for over thirty years. Ken Brooke used to supply a nasal syringe with the Malini Egg Bag. Squeeze it to fill with water then squirt this into the ONE small hole you've made in the egg to blow out the contents. Much easier than making two holes in the egg, then going blue in the face. Let the egg dry then cover the hole with spackle/Pollyfilla. If using a brown egg mix the spackle with a little brown acrylic paint.

The bags we make are meant for heavier eggs. I use eggs-actly eggs and/but due to the heavier fabric I think a heavier egg would be great.
there are many advantages to a heavier bag. Hobson's bag are also heavier.

Hi
Thanks all for the great advice. I do already have an Albini style bag in a much heavier material that I have been using for a great many years, however after watching Luis De Matos' DVD 'The Egg Bag' I was convinced to switch to a Malini bag. The DVD came with an egg bag in a very thin material (but no egg). The particular move I have struggled with, with the heavier eggs, is where the bag is laid flat over the performers hand and the audience member strokes the bag and the bag appears empty. When performing this display, which I feel is very strong, the heavier eggs tend to make the bag fall through the fingers too much, and hence my thinking that a lighter egg is the way forwards (I may change my mind when I actually try one)! I note that in another DVD I have, Francis Menotti uses a hollow ceramic egg, although never come across these (fascinatingly the spectator does manage to break his egg in the recorded live performance, however he deals with this like a real pro). Going to give the blown eggs a try. Lots of fantastic advice on how to do this so will see how this goes. Kind regards Simon |

As many have stated above, make your own blown egg. Having done this many times, here are a couple tips.
One, coat the inside with Epoxy /Resin. You have to mix up a batch and quickly inject it into the egg. Then you must roll the egg around so it adheres/covers the whole inside of the egg. And every once in a while move it around til it hardens, These eggs are very durable. Depending on the size you want, you simply buy that size. Brown or white. And often I try and buy eggs free range from a local farmer as they have thicker shells than the factory farm eggs. This is what I use and they are IMHO by far your best bet. Just takes some work and effort. |

I carry 4 or so plain blown eggs with the hole Hidden with spackle. Even in my birthday party years, I only broke one of them, and I'm not conscious of habling them with care. When I find that one is cracked, I toss it.
I bought my first bag from Charlie Miller, but I think that the booklet that came with it, said Magic Inc on. I still have it, along with the booklet, and it shows no sign of wear. |

The Jeff Hobson eggs, although beautiful, are BIG and they will not fit in the "secret something" in every egg bag out there. They were specifically made by Jeff for use in the Hobson Egg Bag.

Some of us use practice golf balls, instead of an egg. Find the really hard ones. They'll work with almost any egg bag.

I'm with Alan on this one. I found the practice golf ball worked out so well I quit using eggs. I changed the routine a little by modifying my patter to fit. When I perform for a group the will include golfers I do a switch to a real golf ball for the final production and toss it out at the end.
Golfers love it...
