I wish I understood German....

Would a German speaker like to give a synopsis?

And here's an interview with the guy that wrote the 'Hitler's Jewish Clairvoyant' - Mel Gordon

Here's a newer interview with Dr. Mel Gordon. Audio is much better than the previous one (not phoning in), but it's only a short interview.

So apparently, Hanussen started his show by hypnotizing a skeptical woman to orgasm!

hahahaha

Yeah, great interviews.

He describes a 'ritual' where Hanussen turns a goat into a midget (I know 'little person' - but that's how it's described in the interview) using 2 virgins. Apparently there is footage of that somewhere, Dr. Mel has seen it.... doesn't seem to be online anywhere though. I'd love to see that!

How about the 'goat to midget' effect?

Seriously - how do we get to see that?

Dr. Mel said he has the film....

Don't know whether the translation is what you expected, ...

However - here we go! Please keep two aspects in mind: On the one hand Hanussen didn't use a German language the way it is common today. It is rather archaic in the choice of words and construction of sentences. The syntax is horribly interlaced. There are multi-clause sentences to a degree that even native speakers partially have a hard time to follow. Trying to keep this syntax in English language is pretty hard.
Plus keep in mind that my limits in your language might change the manner of speaking and the nuances anyway. And obviously there will be some awkward rapings of the English grammar no matter what.
All that said, here is my clumsy translation of Hanussen's speech:

Quote:
On June 02, 1932, Jan Erik Hanussen said:

I believe it will be quite interesting if I provide some prophecies so that later generations, for which the sound library is determined, should know whether what I have said has actually been fulfilled and whether clairvoyance in fact may be regarded as a valuable instrument of technical time.

I believe that we are at the beginning of a new culture. The past few years have meant the decline of culture, although they have been a boom in technology. Maybe it will be different right from now on.

I believe that people will approach again primitive things in many ways; that the longing in each one of us lives to be human and not machine will fulfil.

This will also have a political impact. Especially in Germany, the country which is most interested for all of us, we are, I am glad to say, at the end of the most terrible wars that have ever shaken a great, free and diligent nation. The next period brings economic recovery. The debts of war will hardly be shared any more.

We are still experiencing various changes within governments. In the end, however, all Germans are united in a single coalition of understanding, moderation, and reconciliation policy. The next government will go this way already, even though it intends to be a government of national concentration.

The next time already brings connection with the left and the right, even in the thought of national reconciliation, evenly in the thought of relieving the nameless misery, which we have gone through.

Cheers
Th.

Thank you! So very kind of you to take the time.

That's actually very interesting and meaningful.

So amazing to be able to reach for a moment into such a fascinating life...

Love this. To Thomas' point, Hanussen's complicated syntax and overly flowery language is consistent with other performers who missed out on academic opportunities and overcompensated by putting on more self-consciously "scholarly" airs (Houdini being another).

For any English speakers looking to learn more about Hanussen, do read Mel Gordon's book, as well as Arthur Magida's; there are some gaps in one filled by the other, both factually and narratively. Be warned, though, that both tend to characterize their subject in perhaps too negative a light. You can find my notes to that effect in Genii (June 2016).

He is, as we all are, an ambiguous character -- neither all bad nor all good. That's far more interesting than rushing to the negative conclusion at every turn.

Nothing ambiguous about the Nazis' though, was there? And covering your back while the rest of the Jews get rounded up, just so you can remain in peanuts and champagne?

It's possible to separate the man from the art, but it's not possible to separate the man from the man.

He deserves the negative publicity. Don't become an apologist because you like magic tricks.

There's nothing ambiguous about the Nazis, looking back at them from our vantage point. And it certainly forms a neat and tidy moralist picture.

But the fact is that nobody knew what the members of the National Socialist German Workers Party (aka Nazis) were capable of during Hanussen's lifetime. The party didn't even have a majority in the Reichstag. That Hitler would someday become a dictator seemed unthinkable by numerous commentators of the time.

That picture also ignores the actual timeline of events. The Nazis didn't keep Hanussen in peanuts and champagne -- he had all that just by being a successful entertainer and publisher before the Nazis showed up. Yes, he's guilty of cozying up to the politicians he thought were on the ascent (he was right) while depending on his wit to keep him out of harm's way as it always had (he was wrong). But by the time the first laws limiting the rights of Jewish citizens appeared in April 1933, Hanussen was already dead. The mass roundups of Jews following Kristalnacht wouldn't happen for five years later.
