I know that the length of time for doing cold reading can change based of many factors.
I know that you can do a one mintue cold reading or even a one hour. But what do you think is the best length of time? Yaniv Deautsch |

It all depends on the situation or venue you are presented with. For example, at a large corporate function where there are many who wish to be read within a limited time span, I might limit my readings to 5 or 6 minutes. However, in another more relaxed performing situation, I might spend as much as 20 minutes delivering a palm or tarot reading.
In either situation, the basic premise of reading the palm/cards and delivering a satisfying, yet entertaining, reading for the sitter is paramount. The length of time is unimportant. However, in a perfect world, I would prefer having the luxury of presenting a reading that lasts at least 15-20 minutes. Unfortunately, that situation not always possible. Joe Z.

I agree with Joe... venue is important. I bring this out in the Psychic Technology manuscripts as did Blair Robertson in his "Money Making Methods for Mentalist" series.
The best device (here I go slitting my own writst...) is the $10.00 for 10-minute pitch... I've made as much as $1,000.00 in one day sitting at a parkside cafe using this approach... IT WORKS! My approach isn't as rigid as Blair's suggestions... I might allow a minute or two here and there for a personal break or expanded reading on a client, as applicable. Nonetheless you can see $50.00 to $60.00 an hour doing this kind of action (+ tips... and sometimes those tips are more than your rate of charge... provided you SATISFY the client.) If you are working steady gig as a Reader and taking appointments, your average Reading will be a 1/2 hour and between $25.0 and as much as $75.00 (again, depending on market elements, how good you are, etc.) I've posted some FAQs on this issue @ the KJMagic forum Mentalism section and I believe it is discussed in my column @ Visions. As I said before, certain of the Psychic Technology manuscripts cover this at a more in-depth level as will the Reader's Workshop I'm currently scheduling with my lecture "Readings In Routine". For info on the Psychic Technologies books check with Andy Leviss... For Lecture scheduling, etc. PM me.

If you sitting down and doing individual readings like in an occult bookstore or Café the average reading is about 20 minutes to a half hour. A big part of the length of a reading is establishing rapport with your clients. It can go longer if you have the rapport and your client is doing a lot of talking. If you can get them talking about themselves you don't work that hard at doing the reading. The worst is the stone they don't tell you much and your cold reading like crazy, fifteen minutes is about all your going to do with a stone. The secret is not to do cold readings for stones. Get them to loosen up. Your personality type is a big factor in readings too. If you a busy body, like people and enjoy gossip, your going to do well as a reader. Some of the cold reading stuff I've read make it into a mind game and contest of wits. Wrong approach and that's why I think a lot of the debunking material is really useless to cold readers.

Personally, I don't think there is a best length of time for me. I've done two minutes and I've done two hours. The thing for me is to always end the reading at a point where the sitter feels that we can talk for days on end. For me, whether it's two minutes or two hours, any reading is only a very small part of a very long conversation.

About 20 minutes works well. If they get into it, then half an hour or even longer. About 90 minutes is about the longest I have done. Very short readings worry me. If you get a strong hit quickly, then you are fine. But to build up the rapport and then draw out the hits to make the reading strong in retrospect, 15 minutes is about minimum.
