Im a huge fan of Cube magic and saw this come up so decided to take the plunge. Whilst the gimmick itself hasn't reached me yet, Ive watched the instructions in depth and thus far, I really like what I see! If it's used in conjunction with other effects like Cube FX or even Cube 3, then it could make for a beautiful routine. I really wanted to be able to do a two cube match in a restaurant environment and being able to approach a table with just a small draw string bag and perform some awesome cube magic is perfect for me! It will take a one time set up but that's fine. I use the Moyu AoLong cubes and purchased a fresh set of stickers ready for its arrival. Its easy to execute the "move" and whilst I could tell "something" was going on in the trailer, I couldn't work out what. So I know my audience will have absolutely no idea at all! They teach you how to perform several match effects with the gimmick and go in depth in several angles to execute the 'move'. At the end they go over one handed solves and a few other little bits!
If you have Cube FX or Cube 3, this will be a valuable asset and whilst I have no other cube gimmicks to compare to, this to me seems like it will work, work well and work for a very long time without difficulty. Ill update my review when the port arrives and I've given it a go! Jamie Daws

This looks great and to me it looks like it can handle close up scrutiny whereas Rubicon might fall short on performing close up.
I do have Rubicon and think it's great,I feel it works best for parlour than close up though. Is this version better for close up? Thanks D

I bought this, watched the first routine and cannot understand how they are solving the mixed up cube. Is this a special cube I have to purchase or are they just solving it normally?

I feel that the instructions, although adequate, leave a bit to be desired.

Thanks Jim for your PM. I get it now.
I'm not a Rubix person so the explanation of the first routine made no sense to me. Arnold

Picked this one up. It’s great but trying to find a good cube for it. Recommendations?

So this finally arrived today and I had planned ahead and purchased some stickers for the Moyu AoLong cubes that I use. The quality of the prop is top notch and whilst I had initial reservations of its convincingness before I had set it up, all of this was eliminated after I had set it up. Honestly, it's incredibly difficult too work out which cube has the gimmick on and which doesn't! Very very deceptive! After spending most of the day practicing the 'Dirty', I decided to show it to the family and it killed! I've created a small routine using other items from Cube FX and Cube 3 as well as a few of my own touches and I think it makes for a beautifully compelling and interesting piece of magic! The only issue I am having is there is a bit of noise during the 'dirty'. This concerns me more than the move itself but no one has noticed so far! Im taking it out to my residency on Friday to really work it in and see how it goes! But so far, I'm a very happy customer!

I mentioned the "talking" problem to a friend -- and he reminded me the audience is supposed to be seeing two plastic cubes close together, even rubbing and bumping into each other! What we hear as "talking" is, to the spectator, the sound of two cubes in close contact with each other.

Anyone have any idea what the Perfect Square Upgrade is? It has no description http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/9130

Hey sorry for the confusion, Robert. We were disappointed with the lack of actual CUBES in the product, so we're going to offer everyone who bought Perfect Square from Penguin Magic 2 free cubes. That's the "upgrade".
Then from now on we're only going to sell it with cubes included that we're adding on our end, as a product titled "Perfect Square COMPLETE" I'll be sending an email to all current Perfect Cube owners with the gift certificate for a free "Perfect Square UPGRADE" I'm a huge believer in getting complete products, especially at a "premium" price point. I'm sorry we let this one go out the door as is. |

^ that is very cool indeed of Penguin to do that.
I bought it off someone here on the Café, and I have to say, it's a very cool gimmick/trick/routine. I love that you can do "the move" right under a specs nose and pretty organically at that. The gimmick is also slightly different than what I thought it would be...a nice surprise. But this difference allows for the very natural manner in which you do "the move". While I don't have Rubicon...I think with that one you have to have the cubes stacked on top of each other. Still very natural, don't get me wrong. But with PS, you don't have to stack them. Just need to do the movements as shown in the demo. While it would have been nice to receive two cubes, I know they wanted to keep it modular so a person could adapt it to whatever cube and stack they desired. Maybe that could have been made more clear in the description but either way, a cool trick. And again, very cool of penguin to include the cubes. |

The cubes work sort of okay and are nice, but they are neither speedcubes nor ones you'd choose to do much cubing with. BUT: and I suppose this is most important to many of us -- they match the shell absolutely PERFECTLY. (As I opened the box I thought I was looking at two new shells!) Now please understand I've never been worried about the shell matching issue. Tonight, Saturday, and again Sunday I'll be performing a routine using a "solved" Perfect Square to swap one audience-scrambled non-shell-matching Z Cube Magnetic for another (scramble-stacked by me). (The premise is simply that I'm casually holding a solved clunky non-speedcube while having decided to give the audience volunteer the more flexible speedcube to scramble. When I first tried the routine last week an ex-magician admitted to me after the show he'd watched like a hawk for anything suspicious, but to his chagrin saw absolutely nothing.) Next week I will report back on how these performances worked out. Meanwhile I'm happy to have the matching cubes in case I decide to do a routine which matches an "audience-scrambled" cube to the sh*ll rather than another cube. |

I've seen a comparative review of PS vs. Rubicon (and maybe a third option).
Was I dreaming?

Surely the problem with all of these gimmick versions is that one cube (the shell) remains mixed? People want to see you solve a Rubik's cube, that's what the cube is for, that's what people expect. But you can only solve the legitimate cube in whatever weird "magical" fashion you want which screams gimmick cube. People assume that a genuine Rubik's cube is nearly impossible to solve. Everyone knows you can't just solve it by waving it around with one hand.
I'll admit, I end my show with a Rubik's cube act where one of the matching cubes remains mixed but that's because it's in a glass jar and won't come out. When I used to show 2 normal cubes mixed not in a jar I would end my show with all cubes solved. I started the routine with solved cubes and ended it with solved cubes. It's like making something disappear, you've always got to make it reappear. Am I missing the point or something? It seems totally illogical to finish with one mixed and one solved. I have people accusing me of using bluetooth cubes and want to examine everything. With a shell you have to use "spectator management" and only let them inspect half the props. |
