Hats of to CBS and a great marketing tool. Give us episode 1 for free, end on a cliff hanger, and charge us to watch the remaining 14 episodes. I am feeling torn on whether to purchase the subscription or not.
I enjoyed episode one, lots of TREK action, interaction, stratagy and etc. All the stuff that has made Star Trek great. Loved the original series and all that followed. Been 12 years with no Trek on TV. This is quite the triumphant return. If I was going to give one critism, it would be that I thought Michelle Yeoh was perhaps not strong enough to be the captain of a star ship. This was what got actress Genevieve Bujold replaced by Kate Mulgrew on Star Trek Voyager. I do know from other films how strong Michelle Yeoh can be. On the other hand, Michelle is playing a captain who is an explorer and has been at a time of long peace. Over all I liked the show. How many of you will purchase the remainder?

I caught the beginning of it before going off to grade linear algebra and differential equations exams.
When the captain and number one found the well (?), the captain apologized for doubting number one. Number one replied, "Oh, ye of little faith." If the character is as intelligent as she's depicted to be, she'd have known to say, "Oh, thou of little faith." Script writers can be real idiots sometimes. |

I met my Partner Tom at a Star Trek Convention. I'm a big Star Trek Fan.
But, ...I'm also cheap. I waited for Far Scape to come on regular antenna TV and I'll wait for This iteration of Star Trek. I enjoyed the show except for the first officer leaving sick bay while in treatment. Seems silly to risk your life when you could just call the bridge. I wish writers didn't think more violent equals more serious Sci. Fi. Thought provoking can be less about violent. Really liked Orville's take on social issues this week with the baby girl. -Mary Mowder |

I suspected as much. Didn't even have to Google that one. But I always like to check to make certain I am learning correctly.
Script writers are indeed idiots sometimes. For a long time the misuse of the word "hacker" in reference to computers has driven me nuts. It used to refer to guys who wrote efficient code and "hacked" out the unnecessary stuff. A "cracker" was the guy who broke in and did illegal stiff. Writers often just do not research.

May I point out that syntax of English may have changed by the time the 23 century comes around.. Compare Shakespearean English to English of today, notice any difference in the words and structure? Maybe a few huh? Don't get hung up on that. If that ruined the show for you, well so be it.
Personally I love the idea of species from places other than Earth having trouble with metaphors and idioms. Language changes from place to place and why not from time to time. I loved the fact that Lt. Cmdr. Data could not use contractions (except when he did) That kind of thing just makes sense to me.

Btw: I read the CBS seet a record for pay service sign-ups last night. Good for them... But they did not get my money. Like Mary, I am willing to wait a bit.

If you want to believe that it was done as a writing device and not out of lack of knowledge on the part of the writer that is up to you.

I've used the phrase many times myself. I am quoting the Bible, so I don't change the plural to a singular. Quotations are quotations.

Not a Trekkie... I prefer Treker.
It has been said that Star Trek represnets hope for the human race. It shows a future where racism and bigotry have been overcome. Where money or lack of money take on far less meaning that today. Where medicine has advanced to all but eliminate human suffereing. But to me, as a Physics Teacher who has been with NASA in the Stratoshphere, and flown on the Vomit Commet into zero gravity, and want so badly to go into space (even a low Earth orbit) Star Trek is more than hope, it is a dream. So yes I am very invested. Note: While I have enjoyed the new Star Trek movies, I feel they are less a representation of what Star Trek is supposed to be, and more shoot 'em up space opera. Nothing wrong with that... but that is Star Wars; very different.

I agree Cliff.
Original Trek and other TV Treks while Roddenberry was alive were more aspirational. During these dark times, I'm even more invested. Mary Mowder |

There is hope for the human race. No need for fantasy worlds in order to be hopeful. But to each his own. Oh and medicine can cure anything apparently but baldness I notice.
