I have a 'Gravity Box' but I think it's pretty much the same as the 'Light & Heavy Chest'. Correct me if I'm wrong. I use the verse of Matt. 11:28 which says “come unto me all of you who are tired of carrying around heavy burdens and I will give you rest.”
I show the inside of the box with 3 silk handkerchiefs inside. I emphasize how light the box is. I tell the kids each hanky represents a heavy burden. I explain what a heavy burden is. Could be losing a job, finding out you have cancer, not having any friends at school, etc, etc. I set the box on a table and tell the kids some people try to go through their heavy burdens on their own without relying on Jesus to help see them through it. I close the box. I have 3 volunteers come up and tell them, let's see what happens when we don't rely on Jesus to see us through our heavy burdens. Each volunteer takes a turn and tries to lift the box off the table, but they can’t. I explain that when we don’t rely on Jesus, our heavy burdens can become very heavy. I open up the box and pull out the 3 hankys and explain to the kids that when we do rely on Jesus and give our heavy burdens over to him, our heavy burdens become light. I place the hankys back inside the box and close the door. Then I tell the 3 volunteers, let’s see what happens when we do rely on Jesus to help us go through our heavy burdens. Each volunteer can lift up the box off the table. |

That is pretty much the same/similar routine above I am working on for adults. Just seems like a great trick to teach this comforting/very important Biblical lesson which I have thought about/relied on often in my own life.
Thanks tbaer, your post validates where I was going with this Gospel routine. I will start a separate on point posting topic on this trick shortly here on The Magic Café' so you may want to re-post your comments again under that new "Light and Heavy Chest" topical heading. I have noticed it is more difficult to find a well made Light and Heavy Chest "in stock" currently at some of the larger dealer websites (like Penguin Magic). Maybe the demand for this particular trick has increased recently due to a version of it being on Britain's Got Talent, who knows... I can't wait to use it next month! |

Here's a video of one performer using the Gertner idea with a biblical illustration.

I knew I had seen that routine before using Gertner's routine with a message -- thanks for sharing that Terry!

Chapter 5 "Ball Tricks", pages 49-51 of the hardbound book "Spiritual Applications For Tarbell I" by Jule L. Miller (author and compiler) is on "The Cups and Balls", linked to Lesson 8 of Tarbell, Volume 1. The author uses his own ideas and ideas submitted to him from magicians all over the world.
Even though this "Spiritual Applications For Tarbell I" book was first published in 1976, it still can be found at some magic shops for sale. The main lesson routine is fully printed out and is based on using black, white and red balls to discuss forgiveness of sins- this routine was suggested by Californian Dave Pacheco. David Roper (Australia) has additional brief routine suggestions on page 51 to use the cups and balls to teach about the search for truth or the search for happiness. |
