I saw the Brooklyn 101 deck at Tannen's in NYC recently, unfortunately he had none in stock other than his demo deck.
Is anybody able to make a comparison between the Brooklyn 101 deck and DMC elites? Need a new deck and it will be one of these two.

DMC are readers and Brooklyns are coded.
What are your needs? If you want to read from a distance I'd go for the Brooklyn. |

As Rick says, it depends on your needs. Both are excellent decks.
DMC have one of, if not the best, reading distances of any reader deck. The Brooklyn decks can be read from even further away, but because they are coded, will take a little longer to read. I have both decks in multiple colors and enjoy both.

Thanks guys,
I was not aware of 'coded' decks. Magic Billy did read the cards from about 3 metres away which was impressive. I was not able to discern the values myself and I put this down to not having my reading glasses on and the low light level, but in view of what you say about the deck being 'coded' this was clearly the reason. My effects are almost exclusively on the mentalism side of the spectrum, I did have a DMC deck but lost it some months ago. Based on these comments I will probably buy one of each (reading at distance will prove very useful). Problem is I'm back in the UK now and Brooklyns are not easy to find here.

I just received both decks, off course I need to spend some time with both decks but based on my first impression I'd prefer the DMC's.
The DMC deck looks ''classy'' while the Brooklyn cards look cheap and look (don't feel!) like they could have been bought in a Dollar store. To be clear: I really do like the cheap look! As mentioned by others both decks use a different system. The DMC's are the easiest ones to learn. Be careful with people taking pictures or filming your performance when using the Brooklyn cards. To those who have the deck, look at it through a camera. |

One important thing to know is that the quality of the Brooklyn is significantly higher than the DMC which is ok in terms of card material, but below average as a deck of cards because the cards are poorly cut (you cannot faro them). The Brooklyn however cannbe faroed without any problem.

I have no problems faroing the DMC decks. However, most decks I've gotten recently from CartaMundi (the DMC, the Butterfly, etc) are HIGHLY preferential towards one faro direction or another. IE, next to impossible to faro in a "face down" technique (from faces to backs) but perfectly fine for "face up" (back to face) faros.
If you're doing faros in-the-hands, the solution is just to turn the deck around. Not as useful for table faros, but I'd disagree that they cannot be faroed. They just can only be faroed in one particular way, rather than either/or like most decks from USPCC/EPCC after a little breaking in. I quite like the new stock/finish from CartaMundi (the same stuff is used on both the DMC ELITES and the Butterflies) and I'd also disagree that they're poorly cut, because the edges are very very smooth. Whatever their cutting process is is just giving the decks a tremendous preference towards one way of faroing.

Actually, I took the decks again to check and I partially agree with Mercury52. DMC are actually faroable even though they are less smooth for it than standard USPCC decks. No idea why I misremembered they could not be at all. Apologises. I can faro the DMC holding the deck face down and faroing from the top to the bottom. However, to me, the butterfly can not be faroed smoothly at all, you really need to force to the point that it is unnatural, very unreliable, and damages the cards (splitting the layers oc the cards)

I personally like the Brooklyn cards better because they look more like Bee Stinger cards. DMC back design is odd and unknown to the public which can raise suspicion.
I just keep my Brooklyn deck in a Bee card case and it does not raise eyebrows.

NOTE: The second generation Brooklyn cards are thinner and softer that the first generation. No problem with Faro shuffles. Although, I like Bicycle Elite stock best for Faro shuffles (but, I get off topic )
The second generation also has more deceptive marks than the first generation.

For whatever reason, I find the Bicycle Elites easier to do strike double lift with as well.

Not wanting to get off topic, but if you guys like the feel and handling of Elite Bikes but also want to use a marked deck, the Penguin "Marked Cards" are also on the Elite stock.

In addition, one deck is marked and the other are readers. Finally, if the Brooklyn cards were softer and thinner I would consider using them as my everyday deck. But, now I use one of the Penguin Elite stock decks (regular, maiden or marked) every day. I am hoping there is a 3rd generation of Brooklyn cards which will allow me to use them as my everyday deck. I already spoke to the inventor about changes that I would like if he makes a 3rd generation.

I am not even considering DMC because of the odd back design.
