I watched Eric Samuels wonderful promo video last night and was struck by the brilliant use of a drum kit during one of his effects -check it out, it's a killer moment. I think it is terrific when Mentalists bring their other talents into their mentalism performances. Another example would be Derren Brown's painting routine which makes excellent use of his pretty decent skills with a paintbrush. (I used to do a semi-comic little bit where, instead of revealing a celebrity name on a white-board, I would become possessed by the celebrity and use my decent, but limited, skills as an impressionist to start speaking as the person-Marlon Brando was my favourite!)

I would love to know if other Café members bring their own specialist skills to their Mentalism performances, and if so, what are they and how do you incorporate them?

A real kinda 'skill' I have is very good visual/spatial awareness...so I can guess people's measurements, point A to point B challenges, that kind of thing...

i'm from an art background, so I also have a three person tarot thing, where I'm blindfolded and three cards are drawn, one for each..i blindfold draw a single card that incorporates the main elements from each - and then they fight over who gets to keep it (contact details etc on the back y'see)...

and my tarography - a lot of my tarography set include the people I perform for, as well as friends and family...and are all shots taken by me...

and when I first started doing house-parties, I'd do a "think a riff" game, and borrow a bass or six-string and replicate it...

I also had a MOABT-esque and design dupe combo using small Marvel comic pocketbooks...and I'd draw the cell that they were looking at, as well as the most important word that was being said too...

a few others, but I'll shut up now...

Hey Martin,

Thanks for the comments on the drumming reveal.
I devote a chapter to this topic in my forthcoming book "Setting the Stage."
Little is more important than how we reveal information and each of us has unique talents/skills that can be applied with some thought and creativity.

Cheers!

It's such a PERFECT choice, Eric. It made me laugh out loud! I would also recommend people check out Ran Gafner's routine on P&T Fool Us which uses his knowledge of music to great effect, allowing very clean free choices during his bells routine. Clever stuff.

Can I get a link to that video? I'd like to see it.

Book sounds interesting, Eric, I'll have to keep an eye out for it.

Oh! To contribute to the actual conversation - I use martial arts skills in some of my demonstrations, and I'm working on routines to use my modest music skills.

Yeah. I studied Aikido for several years and know some other things from my own pursuits.

That's awesome! Is your 'other skill' perfect pitch, or trombone? Or both?

I'm so jealous of people blessed with perfect pitch. I've been cursed with perfect non-pitch.

I know Richard Osterlind plays a mean set of drums, but I doubt we'd see it other than in his Penguin lecture.

I laughed. Thanks for this Martin. You are not alone.

I always love the fact that David Berglas (if I am recalling correctly) could play a thought-of tune on a thought-of instrument.

David Berglas witnessed my psychic perfect pitch routine in London a few years back and really enjoyed it.

When I was 6, I told my grandmother that I wanted to be a magician. She misunderstood my poor elocution and asked me,

"What instrument do you want to play?"

On the spot, I reasoned that the reason she asked was that stage performers must have several talents. Do a few tricks, then play an instrument, etc. I felt under pressure to come up with an instrument right then and there.

I was (and still am) a huge Sherlock Holmes fan, so that's how I learned to play the violin. Perhaps I should break that thing out and create a routine around it.
Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.
