Another bizarre question from me, but not "controversial" like my last one about sword boxes! I'm curious if anyone knows of a cabinet illusion where the magician or assistant is placed in the cabinet, then a section is opened to reveal that part of the person missing. For instance, think Zig Zag Girl but instead of sliding the box to the side, a door is opened on the middle box and you can see right through (or just to an all black interior... either way, no torso). I'm on the hunt for some specific illusions, would be amazing if there were plans for something like readily available rather than me having to design from scratch (which I'm not good at) or commission something ($$$$$).

Google "Girl without a Middle Illusion" (aka Disembodied Princess Illusion). That's one illusion that fits your description.

One source for plans:

Also, there are illusion building companies out there, so you don't have to build it yourself. Some are discussed on this thread:

I think that Jim Steinmeyer's "Three-Space Mystery" (Illusion) might also fit your description.

FYI, there's a used one for sale right now, listed on the Stevens Magic website.

And Peter May's "Slice of Magic" (Illusion) might also fit your description, although the box isn't upright during this routine.

Donald - thanks for the links. The "Girl without a Middle" is the closest, but the fake bits would be obviously fake in the performance I have in mind. Ideally the person in the box could react to the middle being revealed as missing, like in the Zig Zag Girl. "Girl without a Middle" may be a decent compromise.

Maybe you're actually looking for is Chuck Jones' "Mismade Girl" (Illusion), which doesn't have a vanish of the person's torso, but a mix up of their body parts.

A lot of the time, that is presented with the assistant reacting to themselves being found mismade (for comedy).

BTW, another illusion that has the assistant reacting to what's happened to themselves is "Twister". Again, no vanish of their torso, but a change to their body.

P.S. On more tip. You might find what you're looking for, in the plans that Osborne Illusion Systems offers. They offer individual plans as well as books of plans. Take a look at their website (here is the page for their illusion plans, which has illustrations of the illusions).

For example, maybe you're looking for a sideshow illusion, like this one -- Seeing Through a Woman:

That's a lot of links to parse - thank you! Lots of good info! Mismade Girl is also very close, you just don't get the lovely effect of the hands being visible (though there's apparently a variation on it with body parts visible, though I can't find anything on it beyond a brief mention on Wikipedia of all things).

You are not going to find a custom grand illusion to what you want. If you want something to your liking, then you have to contact an illusion builder, and work with him to get what you want. Bring your charge card with you as well.

There are trade offs in magic just like anything else.

Nloding,
If you're searching Wikipedia for information about illusions then you're in the wrong place, even internet/Youtube is not the place to dwell.
Start you're research in illusion books, the history of magic and Hamilton (Osborne illusions) for drawings etc.

Bill - it is looking like there isn't an existing illusion that does what I've described, but many that come close. Ultimately I'm hoping I can find something similar enough that I can make a version of it myself, to my liking. If not, I'll definitely be contacting an illusion builder.

John - no, I'm searching Wikipedia for illusions, thanks.

Dig around in the Illusion Repository, as well. That site also has many illusions listed on it.

http://www.illusionrepository.com/repository/

Also, here's a website with a list of illusion builders (and links to their websites).

http://illusionbooks.com/list-of-illusio......gners-2/

Although it's missing a few listings like Abbott's Magic, Illusion Arts Magic, etc.

There was something like this called Shadow Vision (Ken Whittaker/Creative Illusions). It was kind of a cross between a Zig Zag and Disembodied Princess where the box is slid to the side but is then opened. You can clearly see the head and legs/feet on one side and the middle on the other. The person is able to react to the displacement of their midsection. It was a clever but awkward illusion.

Let me try here nloding, is the center picture in the lower of the two rows close to what you had in mind? (click it to enlarge)

Unfortunately I don't have detailed build plans but maybe someone else can come up with something, it's not all that hard to figure out how to make it anyway.
