"It was more a matter of 'let's calm the situation down'. So you remove the wife, so he can then come back to the gambling,'' one said."
Sounds like Lord Lucan is running the joint.

"Some of the greediest people I have ever encountered are to be found amongst casino executives. If the operators of Nevada and Atlantic City casinos thought they could get away with it, cheating would be commonplace." - quote from "Gambling Scams" by Darwin Ortiz

One can never be 100% sure of getting away with it. They might take the risk if they had nothing to lose. The business of cheating involves taking risks, it is inherently risky and casinos have a lot to lose to weigh against taking that risk. They would not normally cheat because they have the brains to know it is not worth the risk. Likewise, anybody who would risk their neck and their reputation cheating in penny-ante games is a loser: a person who is disadvantaged by a particular situation or course of action. Such cheap skate cheating would obviously is a good bet if the cheat himself was worthless.

If is hyperbole and designed for "effect" to bolster Ortiz's reputation as an supposedly informed "protection expert" in my opinion. Back in the early days of Vegas, the 50s, 60s and perhaps even into the 70s, the casino operations were controlled by the mob, i.e., criminal organizations. Some of the people working in the joints were ex-hustlers and thieves, strong arm men, card and dice cheaters and so forth. However, even the mob knew how important it was to protect the hotel casino operations and was be very careful about jeopardizing that money machine. The risk was too great. Of course, there was some cheating of the player in the 50s and into the 60s, but eventually even these mob guys realized that the strongest thing in gambling was to run a square game. All you needed was enough players and they did everything necessary to keep those players happy - very happy. In more recent times, with the advent of corporations and more enlightened business/management people, answerable to stockholders, it would be moronic to attempt any cheating of the players by the house. The risk of getting caught and losing their valuable gaming license is simply too great. The cheating that does occurs is aimed at beating the house, which is where the money really is for scammers. I don't know when Ortiz made that statement, or why, but I think it is a dumb thing to say especially for the modern gaming scene in reputable gambling areas. Of course, for poorly or unsupervised operations in other parts of the world, I imagine "player beware" might be appicable. |

I believe Ortiz was commenting on their greed. He used the term "IF" not "Does".
He was implying given the opportunity to cheat. That's my take on the quote. Overall this statement was taken out context. It would interesting to see the entire passage. I will look it up. Cag, you're in the Casino industry yes? What were you interactions with executives? PS - Just looked, can not find the quote. dapo24 can you give the page number? |

Found it, page 56.
He is talking about Casino's being honest actually. Claiming that the Gaming Control Board prevents this. I don't know about Nevada, but New Jersey Gaming Board is a complete incompetent idiots. He also states that inside cheating rarely happens beyond the floorman (employees), but anything is possible. Please read if possible. |

That doesn't mean I haven't made considerable money from gambling, but not from the inside of the casino business. |

Selling toilet rolls to casinos can be a more lucrative venture than working in casinos and less boring.

Selling toilet rolls to casinos can be a more lucrative venture than working in casinos and less boring. Speaking from our experience of how much experience of we constantly spend on toilet rolls and other cleaning products in the club business. Running a clean place is essential in restaurant bar and hotel business and the like. The gaming business must see to be clean in more way than one: if they suspect the game is dirty then they will soon find another game. I trained as a chief when I was a kid and “work clean” “work clean” “work clean” is that which the master drummed into us. It applies to the card table as well as cooking of course.

@tommy: I'm flabbergasted. You are a man of many talents...cooing, toilet paper, cleaning products, gambling and hustling...where does it end?
I would not be surprised to learn you are also a Shakespearean actor of some renown - or a daredevil motorcycle rider - or...(I dare to venture further). Very impressive! Just curious. Do you still have your chef's hat and if so, do you like to wear it when cooking? |

Of course, I wear chef's hat when cooking and if I were you I would wear a ten gallon hat and ride a tall horse.

@Cagliostro I'm a little late(don't have much time to view the forums), but the quote reffered to the greed itself, not them cheating. It is clearly said "If they could get away with it" and of course it is clearly implied that they cannot.

They can get away with it and they have and so, of course, to clearly imply that they cannot is BS.

If anyone knows, he certainly does as he has evidently been to many casino operations and no doubt knows most of the people on the inside, what they think and what they do. Guys as sharp and knowledgeable as tommy would never give uninformed opinions - would they???. |
