If you can go to a crafts store and locate a can of Delta Black Antique paint. It is perfect for making anything look old.
A little bit goes a long way, so be sure to dilute it with paint thinner and test out an area with it before you apply it to the whole skull. Best of luck.

Go to a hobby lobby like store and look up
acrylic burnt umber paint. it is a rusty dark color.....paint the object. let it set for under a minute. then rub off with a paper towel......some of the color will be left behind in the cracks....but rub off as much as you can..... I use "folk art" brand.....i made a bone hot rod using polymer clay baking it and then using the burnt umber method and then set the rhinestones on it....look very realistic.... Judge Bean |

Depending on the color you want, the Delta Black will give it a gray appearance, if you wipe most of it off and leave what's left in the cracks and detail areas. If you want it to look brown, then try the burn umber material.
I've found the Delta Black antique finish to work wonders on everything from metals, woods, and even plastic.

Before you risk an expensive skull (resin instead of plastic kit or toy) check Dragonskull forums on prop aging -- or get in touch with Brother Shadow.

Try 'Dr Strange's Instant Old Age Atomiser' now available from Black Artefacts once more. This is a spray that covers your props in a film of dust so it looks as if it has been kept deep in a crypt for years. It simply sprays on in a couple of seconds. It can also be used to age paper and because the spray is dry it will not smudge ink or damage your props.
You will find it on our accessories pages. http://www.blackhart.co.uk Black Hart Click here to view attached image.

Another tip on the burnt umber acrylic: mix in some soil, baked dry in the oven and crumbled fine. A mixture of burnt umber and soil, rubbed off as JudgeBean suggests, can be used to make fake turquiose out of polymer clay.
If you want to get more sophisticated, please consult with my favorite taxidermist (stayed tuned for further developments): http://www.customcreaturetaxidermy.com/ Yours, Paul |

Is the monkey willing to get married? That should age him ten years in six months.

I personally discovered that a simply gold band doesn't look like it should weigh much, it doesn't even fell very heavy when you hold it in your hand, but put one on your finger and you gain twenty pounds!

Paul ,
By the way, if you like taxidermy you will probably enjoy a book called “Stuffed Animals and Pickled Heads” by Stephen Asma. Lots of interesting info about natural History Museums “behind the scenes”. |

A good scrubbing with brown shoe polish does miracles.
