Monika's mother died two days ago..
At 97. In Munich.

I wrote a song for her earlier this year.
The last verse went:
"Veronika, she's doing fine;
in fact she's 97!
And Lord knows he ain't about to let her die(!),
..he don't want no hell in heaven!"

The only things sharper than her knitting needles,
was her tongue.

Monika hopped the first train heading south.
She gave me and Dooley-the-Dog explicit instructions,
to appear in Munich,
in 10 days times, with the waggon.

My cart and horse,..and dog,
travel kinda slow.
"We mosey."
30 km/h,...18 mph.
(,..haven't been fined for speeding my entire life!)

I drive basically 'evenings',
hoping to avoid starting a 'parade'.
..everybody following,..stuck behind...ME.
Small roads, through small townes,
..follow rivers, avoid mountains.

Two nights ago, I peddled thru Hofgeismar, in north Hessen.
Hanging everywhere were hand-painted signs:
"Weinfest. Wochenende. KOMM!"

i'd be stupid not to!

Without Monika, the 'big Show' is on ice.
My smaller 'romantic piano' "Pian-ini"?
I feared two funerals in one week.

I've been working,...struggling with a small manipulation act,
..for the Streets,
packs smalls,
..everything in a box on wheels.
I thought I'd give it a roll.

Because of terrorist threat,
Fests in Germany have become pretty tight.
Streets are blocked with big bulky objects,
..police are out in numbers..
In this small towne,
they had the streets blocked
with farm-waggons(!),
packed high, with hay!
You could tell, by the smell,
the waggons were usually used by the farmers
to transport something else!
I rolled around the obstacles,..holding my nose.

I didn't get far into the Fest,
before two Police officers stopped me
and questioned what I was up to.
Both blond and big.
Man and Woman.
But instead of 'Adam and Eve',
more 'Hannsy and Frannsy'.
..these guys had controlled more than one Brat-wurst stand,
as well(!).

"Was gibt's?"

"Magic Show. Ich bin ein Strassen-künstler."

"Lass uns sehen."

....they were curious what was in the box.

Even BEFORE un-packing(!),
I had a good number of 'rubber-necks'.
As I started un-packing,
with two sceptical Police,
armed with Hot dogs, mustard, and authority;
I had an 'edge',..with depth!

{it crossed my mind to dump Monika
and start working with these two(!),
but I'm not sure I could afford to feed them.}

"Zeig uns was." (Show us something.)
, wasn't a 'request'.

I produced my Wand,..then a Billiard Ball.
Did some manipulation,..
Hannsy and Frannsy looked at each other,..
then looked at the googlers,
.......and said,...ordered:
"He's a Strassen-Künstler. Give him something!"

The folks started digging deep.
,..pushing my luck,
I said to my 'partners',
"Why don't you take off your hats,
and go around and collect?,..!"

"Don't be a smart-a** Kevin!"

öh,..that one sat.
I shut up.
Graciously acepted the offerings.
My 'friends and helper' headed off to the next pizza stand.
I packed up and rolled deeper into the Fest.

I played ALL night!
I never needed to pull an edge.
,...I was constantly approached by folks asking,
"Kevin, show us a trick."

'Kevin' doing his thing.

It was a good night for 'Kevin'.
Dooley and I have been rolling his coins all morning.
Time to leave Hofgeismar,
..and 'Kevin' behind.

Southward bound,

*. * *. *. *. *. *. *. *. *. *. *. *. *. *. *. *. *. *. *

...playing gin-rummy with this Lady,
not one penny in the room was safe.
Tarzan used to be in a three piece suit(!),
...before he played a round of paste-boards with her.

As much as we fought, argued, kicked, bit, and swore;
we always openned our doors for each other,
the next time we met.
She had a back-bone, an opinion,..
often a smile,..
and raised a 'good girl'.

When the 'pearly gates' open,
she won't "run thru them".
She'll stand as tall as her crooked body let's her,.
slowly walk through,.
look around and say,
"Who's in charge here?"

I smile when I think of her.

Dear Gallagher, we almost started to cry reading this story.
First because it is very funny. Then it is very emotionally.
We want to thanks say. And safe drive. Angela
