Hmm. Is it just me or the angel on the card looks like it's been simply covered by some kind of red ink? He is still there, but is just less visible.

Yeah, I'm guessing some kind of red transfer thingy to put on the angel, and that burns off when heated showing original white angel ? Still a nice variation and visual effect. Just not sure it's worth $40 after tax and shipping ?

I'd imagine this trick plays better in pubs than on the streets in the daylight. While this isn't something I would perform, I do like the design of the lighter (and I'm a fan of the trailer as well!).

Although it does look visual...I'm sure when using a lighter most specs will recognise that there is a heat sensitive gimmick in play...even when I used to do the effect where a playing card changes into another one in a specs hand (using a DL)...many specs said it might be a heat sensitive card.

I just saw this on a Facebook news feed and instantly knew that this was an effect that I had conceived in 2010. I came home and looked in my hard drive and found the file.....coincidentally it was under the folder Magic Submission Videos. Now I cannot remember if I submitted this to Ellusionist over 7 years ago or not as that was a long time ago but I do know I have sent it to Paul Harris in the past, but this one looks amazingly like the one I had come up with. This could very well be a case of independent creation but with it being in the Submission folder and me knowing I have sent over several videos to Paul Harris and Ellusionist on my creations seems a bit fishy....like they may have thought I would have forgotten or moved on from magic and not still been following it.
Feel free to check out the screen shot below with the time stamp https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B24665A......=sharing Here is the email submission I sent to Shaun Dunn who was previously with Papercrane Magic https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B24665......tNUhNQWM Here is the email submission I sent to PaperCrane Customer Service on it as well. https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B24665......GV1VuQlE Or here is the video I just uploaded so you can see the similarities https://youtu.be/Y6A9btcE9XA So this idea has been out there and I have sent it and emailed it to several companies with evidence of a couple people I have sent it to. So you be the judge...I will be guessing Lloyd Barnes or Ellusionist will be reaching out to me soon.....here is my direct email: jordanjohnsonismagic@yahoo.com |

Hey Jordan, I'm speachless. That is definetly the same trick. Why don't you sell it as a download?

I would think people would want to check out the lighter after looking at the card.

On Nov 2, 2017, jordanjohnson wrote: Hey Jordan, First of all thank you for the post and thank you for being courteous. It's rare for people to be so in situations like this these days. I've just seen your video and it seems (without 100% knowing your method for the appearance of the angel) that we do have a similar core method for the third segment to the Abyss routine. Routine being; 1. Angel transposes from playing card to lighter. 2. Vanishes from lighter. 3. Reappears on card. As a man of my word, you can have full assurance in me when I say that I've never seen your video before. I've been working at Ellusionist for 3 years (almost to the day) and have only had access to submissions from the month I started there onwards. To gain access to past submissions, I'd have to know the submitters name and title of effect, then have our webmaster go back and source it. If you did submit it to Ellusionist originally, it would probably have landed in Jason Brumbalow's inbox. Unfortunately however, it'd seem that he doesn't work in the magic industry any longer. As for submitting it to Shaun Dunn and Papercrane, I have no access to their submissions box; so again would have not have had a chance to have seen your work on this effect. I appreciate the link to the video as it helps highlight the similarity and many differences. I had originally played with the idea you showed but felt it didn't make the effect come full circle and always felt a bit finicky. So I spent a long time making every element of the routine work together in unison. I.e. A leads to B, B leads to C, C brings it back to A. It's this routine as a whole that really separates it from others out there in my eyes. As you've suggested, this is a prime example of independent creation and as we both know, in magic this is an every day occurrence. Since it wasn't published or brought to my attention in any capacity, there's no way I could have known or done anything about it. Feel free to drop me a PM if you want to chat further. All the best, Lloyd |

Congratulations on your new effect Lloyd, very nicely realised version. I respect the gentlemanly reply you gave Jordan also. Why don't you guys collaborate on a new project? Obviously you think alike

Not to add to the mix, but I bought a similar effect (no engraved lighter): PHOENIX ANGELS by Shawn Evans in 2006(?).
The main part of the trick [Phoenix Angels] consist of the Twilight Angel theme with the visual re-appearing / re-storing of one of the Angels back to it's original position. Also, this trick was published (2012) in the book: PRESTIGE PEN PROJECTS: DIY Gimmicks:Flash,Smoke, PSI & Other Writing Instruments by Mr. Evans (Mimesis Magic). I just thought I would let you know for crediting purposes,in regards to the "re-appearing angel" concept. |

Update: I found the written instructions for PHOENIX ANGELS and the copyright date is 2007 -- that's one year after a certain company released a certain type of pen as used in the PA effect.

Hi All,
I'm assuming this came with the lighter, right?! Or do we need to buy it separately? Thanks, Rodrigo. |

Twilight Angels on steroids ? I'd call it more of Twilight Angels Lite. That's OK though, the original is a gem but it's a bit cumbersome sometimes. I'd like to try incorporating this into my Twilight Angel routine, or just having it as an alternative. Can anyone comment on the quality of the lighter? If I saw a nice Bicycle Angel engraved Zippo in a cigar store, I might pay $40 just for that if I was in the right mood.

I finally got the chance to play with this tonight. While I don't dislike it, I still prefer the original with the special cards. HOWEVER, the lighter was worth the price of admission IF you have a good supply of the original Paul Harris Twilight Angels cards.
What I'm planning on doing is using the lighter to apparently pull the angel off the playing card (a.k.a. the vanish) then show the image on the lighter (same as Lloyd's handling). But next, I'll use the spin paddle move (can't remember the actual name) to apparently pull (remove) the angel from the lighter into my other hand (display both sides of the lighter to show it blank) then "let it go" into the sky. Note: while doing the lighter move either leave the card face up on the spectator's hand or nearby table. Next, position the lighter as per the original to reveal its appearance next to the other angel. Another aspect that I very much liked from Lloyd's tutorial was the idea of just removing a couple of cards from your wallet or pocket instead of asking the spectator to select a card. What would have been nice is to have a lighter with the Maiden back design so that you could take advantage of the newer full-deck version of Twilight Angels. Anyway, some good thinking on Lloyd's part. |

Just got this; very nice, though as another poster suggested, I'd probably restrict this one to lower-light situations. In broad daylight, I'd worry people are apt to notice, well... what others upthread noticed. I'm also inclined to fiddle with the handling a little. Lloyd suggests doing it as a one-off with cards from one's wallet, but I think it'd be worth the extra finger-work to be able to (apparently) do it with a spectator's selected card, maybe as a follow-on to a previous effect, as a way of dispelling suspicions that it's been specially prepared in some way. Also, having the whole deck in play opens up more options for the initial angel vanish, which I'd like to make a little more visual than it ends up being in the suggested handling. The core effect is absolutely solid, but I think there are ways to make it stronger with a bit of tweaking.

I like Videos that really show the trick and how it is done.
Really rare with Elusionist this day. Of course it always gives people the chance of knowing how it is done just by watching it but I think as long as the props are good that does not really matter. So my basic question after searching online for the price of an engraved Zippo lighter is, are the props well made? (And is it a real Zippo / actually engraved or just screen printed?) I have done a reappearing angel effect that is kinda similar for some time but used one cut out from flash paper that is "plucked" out of the card and then burned just to reappear on the card. Having the angel on a lighter might save me some crafting time because they are a pain in the ass to make.
