In the Autumn Semester of 1985, Professor Martin T Orne gave a guest lecture in our Introduction to Psychology class at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. His lecture was on hypnosis and he asked anyone who was interested to sign up for further information and possible participation in hypnosis experiments.
I went to his research facility with about 30 others. Professor Orne asked us to sit comfortably, to relax, and to listen to a tape on a reel-to-reel machine he was about to play. We were induced into a hypnotic state relatively quickly, which in my case, led to a long journey into the study of the human mind. The tape was used in a standard way to test the hypnotic susceptibility using protocols developed at Harvard and Stanford Universities. The participants were later part of a sample of respondents for experiments into the possible effects of hypnosis on forced recall, or the possible effects of hypnosis on hypermnesia. I was selected to take part in the experiment. Every week for six weeks, I would return to the research facility and be induced into a hypnotic state and asked to correctly identify a set of images from a random selection of images. The results of the experiment showed that hypnosis did not enhance the recall of the images. There was no statistically significant difference between the recall rates of non-hypnotised subjects and hypnotised subjects. The results of the study were published in The Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory and Cognition: ***Dinges, D. F., Whitehouse, W. G., Orne, E. C., Powell, J. W., Orne, M. T., & Erdelyi, M. H. (1992) ‘Evaluating hypnotic memory enhancement (hypermnesia and reminiscence) using multitrial forced recall,’ Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 18 (5): 1139-1147.*** My time with Professor Orne also included further explorations into the power of the mind. We sat and discussed hypnosis and his work on false recall, ideomotor response, and age regression. As I have studied mentalism and witnessed countless performances, read numerous texts, and developed my own style of performance, I recalled my time with Professor Orne and began to imagine a performance in which participants were gathered for a psychology lecture and demonstration. The lecture would recount the Orne experiments and the importance of knowing the science behind hypnosis, ideomotor response, and age regression, but then slowly introduce, what Chuck Hickok calls, ‘increasing implausibility’ to the end of the lecture and demonstration. The setting would be simple, the materials scientific, and the impact incrementally amazing. The Orne Experiments recount my experiences with Professor Orne, the subsequent developments and experiences thereafter, and provide a fully scripted and explained lecture cum performance that delivers an impactful demonstration of extra-sensory perception. One phase of this presentation uses a Buddha Machine. I had come across these while browsing the internet. It is a small box made of high quality materials that plays loops of ambient music. I liked the idea of 'testing' whether memory could be enhanced by ambient music. The Buddha Machine seemed the perfect solution. It is intriguing, looks like a transistor radio and fits well along with the other materials used in the presentation (clipboard, counter, stopwatch, pencils, and image cards).
http://www.fm3buddhamachine.com/v2/ The presentation can work with home made image cards, playing cards, or other images, but I have come to absolutely love the Visionary 3 cards from Thought Illusions: http://www.thoughtillusions.com/thevisionary3.html These images are very much like those used in the original Orne Experiments as they are nondescript, bold and simple, and easy to recognise. |

I'm very intrigued by this. It's along the lines of something I'd been toying with for some time. Will definitely put it on my "to buy" list.

The section on age regression is quite novel in that Orne spent his life dedicated to the problem of false memory syndrome: http://www.fmsfonline.org/?ginterest=Hypnosis |

I am pleased that this will be delivered at the University of Huddersfield and we will seek to make a recording of it.

Great group this evening. Circa 50 in the audience, lots of feedback, and superb reactions from many. Video to follow.
