Earlier this week Looch released his latest product called Close Call. It consists of an ebook with an accompanying video of a lecture he gave in September this year at Mind Summit in Cologne, Germany.

The lecture is described as a blueprint for performing and entertaining in the close up environment and in it he outlines the top 3 logistical problems that can destroy a performance, and teaches how to tackle those problems to ensure a smooth an effective close up show.
The lecture is an hour long and the ebook supplements the lecture content at about 30 pages long. It is a theory based lecture and covers a lot of 'the what if' situations you may find yourself in.
With the hundreds of close up events Looch has done over the years it is all first hand experience of what has happened at various events he has performed at and how he has dealt with them. In the lecture he offers first hand advice and ideas about what you should, and perhaps more importantly shouldnt do should you find yourself in any of these situations.
It also covers how to make your performances more visual by creating focal points and using the space around you.

Its available for instant download from his site readmymind.co.uk

For those interested in this as I was....For the record, the PDF is available for download, the video is NOT. This is always a big issue for me. I would not have purchased had I known that the video was streaming only. Maybe (hopefully) at some point this will change, but currently the video is NOT downloadable.

Hi Joel, thanks for letting everyone know about 'Close Call'.

A few questions that have been asked over on the FB page:

The lecture footage was recorded live at Mind Summit 2017. It has been edited to 1hr and had graphics overlaid at specific moments.

The ebook is approx 30 pages that goes into more detail some of the key points I discuss during the live lecture.

There are no tricks in this lecture.

There are however ideas on how to take existing tricks in your repertoire and enhance them for close up gigs.

Will this lecture make me a better performer? If you take on board the suggestions I've outlined, you WILL improve as a close up performer 100%

Many thanks

For those who have severely weak wifi and internet connections, I have helped them get a download of the footage. The best way is to always speak to me in private.

I am meeting with my video guy Monday. I will be speaking to him about making it downloadable for a short period of time for those wanting to watch it offline.

Appreciate you pointing this out. Dealbreaker for me also (generally speaking).

I've finally finished watching this and I have to say, this is another fabulous product from Looch!

I only wish this had been released years ago, as it would have prevented me from having some rather horrible experiences. Looch knows his stuff and I constantly found myself nodding and also making lots of notes. I honestly feel this should be required watching for anyone considering performing in the trenches. It will save you so much time and stress and also make you a much better professional performer.

Very highly recommended.

Thank you for your review of the lecture Iain

It's not a topic many have took on and isn't the easiest to discuss

I have watched the lecture twice. This man is obviously a teacher. His pacing is brilliant and the content is second to none.
For the novice or newbie there is a fund of information. For the experienced. It’s conformation that your doing it right.. or information as to what your doing wrong. When you go up to a table an the alpha male says F@#& off. What do you do. This lecture gives you permission to do what alpha guy said.......and really good advice. I must declare that I’m a fan of looch’s work and although I often recommend his work to colleagues. It’s not blindly.. I say give it a listen and see.

I've been performing mentalism at a destination spa, mostly in two situations - a parlor format, and close-up standing behind a table.

But lately I started doing strolling mentalism for receptions and parties, and quickly found that it presents new challenges.

Looch's "Close Call" addresses a lot of these problems, plus some I haven't (thankfully) yet encountered. ("Close Call" is a one-hour video lecture and a supplemental pdf that handily sums up the lecture.)

He discusses what to do when you arrive at a gig, how to scope out the layout and guests so you deliver the best possible performance.

He provides tips on performing for the tipsy - for example, why using a stacked deck can mean trouble, and what to employ instead.

Looch covers the various distractions a strolling mentalist has to contend with, particularly loud music, food service, and photographers. (His tip on working with photographers is gold.)

There is also good advice on adding more impact to close-up mentalism, which offers less to look at than magic does (magicians have floating finger rings, cards in wallets, fire, etc.).

Finally, he imparts a solid idea on how to manage your performance space and draw the most people to watch your performance.

All of the problems and solutions in "Close Call" are things I'm encountering more often. If you're in the same situation, "Close Call" is highly recommended.

Cheers,
Jerry

I think you should demand another go once he's practiced. A pic looking down at you would be slightly more flattering. 'Cos it did all go a bit Brucey.

I've recently finished watching and reading Looch's Close Call and his trial and error through his carreer will give you honest, real world solutions and will challenge you to solve your own real world problems.

I'm from Paraguay and I'm a full time magician (and not a mentalist) and our settings in close-up magic is no different from many venues around the world. So the lecture will serve you even if you're not a mentalist and regardless the environment you work.

As TerryMC said, you'll know if you're doing it right or you'll know how to do it right.

I must admit that, I have encountered similar (or worst) problems cited on the lecture so for me was more a confirmation of doing the right thing. Even so, I've learned several tactics to avoid problems.

If you do this for a living, get this. If you're planning to do this for a living, get this. I love lectures much more than tricks because you get to see the human side of the performer and Looch is a great guy and a great teacher.

I was hoping he would share an example of a setlist and performance time for drinking/non-drinking audiences. I felt somehow he could get more specific on some aspects of a performance.

Perhaps those secrets are yet to be unveiled and I'll be willing to acquire them as soon as they are released

Best,

Dante

I agree, I thought the section on managing performance space, which I think is harder for mentalists when there is a sleights magician who by their very nature will be more visual, though not necessarily more engaging, is also employed at the venue. I found this information very useful and certainly gives you thoughts and ideas on how you can menage a crowd making your show more visual

I wonder at the name choice, though - to avoid confusion. There are already earlier published mentalism related material of that name.
My ebook was published in 2010 and sold or gifted to many here on the Café'. Another person also published under this title in 2014. Maybe others.

I am posting this because I received a query from a confused friend.

Not a big deal, I guess, since it is a common enough phrase. Except that I took care to research the Café' archives and Internet general before selecting that name.

The danger is that someone might not buy Looch's book because they think they already own it.

The term 'Close Call' simply refers to numerous 'Close Calls' that I've experienced during my time as a performing mentalist. It was the title of the lecture I gave that's all.

Jheff has recently reviewed 'Close Call' over at JMOM

LOOCH
CLOSE CALL
Suggested Retail Price:£26.50

THE BLURB:
In September 2017 Looch was flown out to Cologne, Germany to give a very special lecture at Mind Summit.

The lecture, entitled ‘Close Call’ has been described as the blueprint for successfully entertaining at close up events around the world. In it Looch outlines the top 3 logistical problems that can destroy a performance, and teaches how to tackle those problems to ensure a smooth and effective close up show. ‘Close Call’ consists of the physical lecture that was filmed live at Mind Summit 2017, along with a detailed eBook of lecture notes that breaks down each problem and arms the reader with a wide range of tips and techniques to utilise at your own gigs to ensure a smooth and successful performance.

In addition, Looch teaches a range of subtle ties that he uses at each of his close up bookings. The goal is to maximise the impact your performances will have on your audience, and to ensure a smooth and trouble free event for all concerned.

‘Close Call’ by Looch consists of the following:

Online lecture (Filmed live at Mind Summit 2017)

Detailed eBook - ebook contains link and password to video

**JHEFF’S GUIDE**

WHAT IT IS:
E-Book (28 pgs) and instantly viewable video (approx. 1 hr.)

HOW ACCURATE OR COMPLETE THE BLURB IS:
It is accurate, but it doesn't name the three "logistical problems tha t can destroy a performance." They are alcohol, loud music, and distractions, which are three areas which performers need to know how to expertly handle or their performances at social events can, indeed, be destroyed.

JHEFF’S JUDGMENT:
This is an essential seminar for anyone who wants to perform at social events, specifically close-up, and doesn't have much experience as this will provide invaluable information to help you prepare for the unexpected occurences that may happen. Especially if you're an inexperienced performer, or you perform for these types of events, this is something I highly recommend you check out.

**MY COMMENTS**
This is an essential seminar for anyone who wants to perform at social events, specifically close-up, and doesn't have much experience as this will provide invaluable information to help you prepare for the unexpected occurences that may happen. If you choose to perform at such events (and, let's face it, most of us do), there are three areas which must be considered before doing so: alcohol, loud music, and distractions. In both the one-hour lecture, and PDF notes, Looch doesn't so much tell you how to solve these problems, but points them out and all the various issues involved so that you can best plan what to do. Everyone will handle such situations differently and Looch wisely explains some of the ways he's handled them, but encourages you to come up with whatever responses best suit your style and needs. Being aware, and preparing yourself, for all these issues discussed will lead to a more successful and memorable event for the client. Especially if you're an inexperienced performer, or you perform for these types of events, this is something I highly recommend yo you check out.
