Looks like Rick Lax has a new release.
http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/9257 Ad copy: A “good” magic trick fools most people. A “great” magic trick fools most magicians. But what do you call a trick that fools ALL magicians? You call it, THE END. Rick Lax has been refining THE END for over 6 years. Similar to BINARY CODE—the trick that DESTROYED Penn & Teller—Rick’s latest card creation fools every magician who sees it. Here’s how it looks: You give the spectator a folded-up piece of paper. Then you freely show her a mixed-up deck of card and hand it to her. She cuts the cards wherever she wants and looks at whatever card she randomly cut to. Then she slips the card back into the middle of the deck. You tell her to open up the piece of paper, and when she does, she sees a number. She deals down that number of cards…and arrives… AT HER CARD. It’s a virtually unexplainable miracle. Here’s why: -The spectator can pick ANY card in the deck. -The spectator returns the card to the middle of the deck on her own; YOU DO NOT touch the cards. -The spectator opens up the paper on her own; YOU DON’T TOUCH OR SWITCH THE PAPER. -After the spectator deals down the number she finds on the paper, she arrives at her card. THE END isn’t a quick, throwaway trick. It’s an impossible-to-explain demonstration that should be saved for the right occasion. Slaying a difficult spectator. Entertaining fellow magicians. Closing a masterful card set. Fooling Penn & Teller. It’s one of THOSE tricks. It’s that good. It’s THE END. |

Also, it reminds me of Jonathan Pendragon's "Infinite Improbability" from his Penguin lecture. You can see the performance of this trick here, along with other performances: http://www.jonathanpendragon.com/videos.html

Re: Hands Off - My thoughts exactly - I wondered how this differs, or is it the same? It is a great effect, though I do like the fact in Richard's you get to reveal the card they chose before they find it at the named position. I also think the large cards Richard uses help with justifying the handling of the cards in Hands Off. Still, I am wondering if/how this differs.

Is Hands off in any of Richard‘s lectures? I saw "Hands off extreme" for $99 on his website. Is it the same one?

Hands off didn't get interesting before a member here (and on Mentalist Sanctum) suggested to reverse the stack
I can't remember if that person ever was refered to or reckognized. Probably not. It sounds to me that the versions mentioned above are built on the same principle, - but without the reversed stack

Hands off is also part of seperate download of Osterlind's 13 Steps: 4: Playing Cards
http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/5621 It looks similar but I think the principle is a different one because the counting is not face up in Rick Lax's trailer. |

Here's a video of Kreskin himself performing Richards original routine, doesn't go quite to plan but he does his best to recover

While the method shares some commonalities in each of these, there are some details in the Lax version which add some shade when showing other magicians. As far as fooling all magicians, clearly not, as some will be familiar with certain aspects of this method from exposure to the effects above.
Nonetheless, Lax's The End presentation is a very good dramatic hook which can be played out over the course of a small set of card tricks. The method to Hands Off Extreme is the best in group, and there is a very good reason it's that expensive. The End achieves a very similar aesthetic at a bargain price. |

I have purchased and watched the download twice. I am a very non professional magician so don't
like to spend much money on tricks. I also have over the past years decided I would only buy and learn card magic. I like Rick's instructions and simplicity of some of his magic. I can't compare to the magic mentioned above as I have heard the names of the tricks but do not own them. After the setup the trick is very easy to perform. There is some additional things taught which would make it more deceptive from what you see in the trailer. I can't say too much more as it would get into the how. Mike |

Ok watched the download, and it really is very close to self working so I feel as if reporting my thoughts this early is fine.
There is a set up, and once the trick is performed it is NOT instant reset (would not take long to reset however, and I'm sure you could theorically do this in front of the people you have just performed to). This is also a trick that you will need to commit an entire deck to. I don't personally think these are issues as long as the trick is worth it, so: Is it really hands off? Yes. Can the prediction be left in the specs hand from the beginning? Yes. Is the process drawn out or convoluted? No, as streamlined and fair as you can get. They could have really shown a full performance with little risk of exposure (only those who are aware of the method would clock on..probably). Although this trick can be easily done by a beginner, there are certain audience management considerations that I feel like a beginner might overlook, Rick did cover this in the tutorial thankfully. The tutorial (minus performance) is about 20 minutes. The 20 minutes covers the set up extensively, a basic explanation of the principle at play (not much to explain to be honest), and the few audience management considerations. Presentation is brushed over, this is unsurprising considering the price. I personally wasn't fond of Rick's presentation (although I kinda liked "the end" prediction element), as I felt like more could have been fleshed out of the build up. I suspect most people who pay for this will purchase and perform as is, which is fine. But this effect is so hands free, fair, and straight forward that it does open up the door. Rick also touches on a further addition that makes the trick "more deceptive". I guess it does make it more deceptive, but it ramps up the audience management needed, and when he demonstrated this addition I found it illogical, a tad risky, and ultimately unnecessary. I think he knew this, and he did treat this as a throw away that he personally doesn't use. Will I use this? I think I will.. I really don't like one trick decks, but this is very easy and low risk, presentationally open, impossible looking, and very fooling. |

I don't recall where I first saw the Osterlind version, I think it may have been in the Penguin lecture, but after watching the Lax effect, it doesn't seem much different. I guess The End is more of a prediction, so there's a slightly different presentational angle, but the method is (it seems to me) exactly the same. It's definitely a good effect, but I guess I was hoping there was something new here. Also, there are no credits. I would think that Osterlind's effect was well known enough to come up in the process of releasing of The End.

Bought it.. and I concur with both the above reviews. It does require a prepared deck.. but the deck can actually be spread at the beginning to show it's 'apparently' fair. Follow Rick's advice concerning the spread and you'll not have a problem. This is NOT a complicated effect. It involves a mathematical principle.. or perhaps I should say, a mathematical fact, that makes everything copacetic. This fact is what makes the effect virtually self-working.. aside from the initial prep.
I dislike paying ten bucks for one trick.. unless it's something I'll use. I'll definitely use this. Ten bucks well spent.
