The biggest difference however was the terrified reactions of Judge Anggun in Asia’s Got Talent, who inadvertently deserves a lot of credit too for Riana’s success. Watching Anggun’s terrified reactions added heightened drama to the act that might not have been there without her on the panel.

The over-the-top, obviously scripted responses of the judges were cringe-inducing to me. Clearly, a decision was made by management to push Riana forward as a novelty contender. I guess they thought she would be good for ratings. Personally, I found it all very amateurish, like a bad high school production of The Crucible, but I admit I am not the target audience as I am not particularly drawn to bizarre magic..

Kind of what I did a few years back. Monster high dolls appeared 3 times each time I opened the doors. Finally my assistant popped out dressed as a Monster High doll.

I wonder if that same act(s) could stand up under BGT or Simon Cowell? That WAS a kind of obvious that the judges were hamming. But, let's give the girl some credit. Yeah, she is a Denny creation. But MAN! He picked the right girl! The twitching and tics were really convincing. Her reply, "WE...are PLEASED..." gave me chills! This could have easily been done on a show like World's Greatest Magic. Maybe develop a show of just Bizarre. World's Spookiest Magic! Yes? No?

I was approached after a show I did last week by a spectator who chatted about other performances he had seen and wanted to know if I watched them, too. He exclaimed "And the scary girl with the twitches? She was incredible!"

When the lay audience spontaneously praises someone's performance, they did well.
Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.

Even among bizarrist her show is a paradigm shift. Typically I’d say an engaging and dynamic personality is the critical criteria for a successful act. However her character stands in sharp contrast to this ideal and yet she consistently won the audience over big time. To me, that is impressive.
