I agree that it is not terribly useful to attempt practice readings without some specific context for each reading.
I have created a group of free practice tools, and made them available on The Deceptionary. These generate random querents, topics of interest, and oracle values, for a goodly variety of oracles (including, of course, playing cards).
The Deceptionary :: Elegant, Literate, Contemporary Mentalism ... and More :: (order "Calculated Thoughts" from Vanishing Inc.)

After reading the discussion I was suprised that the excellent eBook "The Chimney Sweep's Victorian Oracle" by Paul Voodini has not been mentioned yet. Really outstanding, written in classical Voodini manner and very easy to get a hang on. One of the first reading systems I learned.

Oh sorry! Must have over looked that. I use it on a regular basis and really, really love it. After the reading I am often asked where I learned to read the cards and than I have the amazing back story of this being a reading system that is still used in the East End. I often tell the whole story.
