I have been very impressed with the magazine so far.
I am a bit snowed under at the moment (both literally and metaphorically) - so haven't checked out the latest issue yet. But I am looking forward to checking out Karl's thoughts on marked decks since this happens to be an area I have been looking into over the past month. |

Hi. Volume 4 has just gone out. Here is a summary of the contents:
CARCOTIN Cards and coins are classics in magic. This routine combines cards and coins along with a gimmicked Candy tin and an un-gimmicked candy tin in an excellent routine that can be performed as a five to ten minute show segment or a thirty second miracle! AMBITIOUS COIN This is an awesome effect! Four coins, three US quarters and one Chinese coin on top. The four coins are placed in a participant’s hand. They close their hand and squeeze hard. They open their hand and they have squeezed one of the US coins through the Chinese coin. The effect is repeated two more times. Another version of this same routine uses a just slightly more advanced move and four regular quarters, each one can be borrowed from a different participant, and a sharpie pen. The coins are initialed by each participant, and each coin travels to the top, one at a time, in each participant’s hand. UNGIMMICKED COINS ACROSS This is a follow up routine to the Ambitious Coins above. I think Gregory Wilson is one of the most talented entertainers around. This is my version of his un-gimmicked three coins across. MonteZILLA I love this monte! I know, I know, how many monte routines do we need, right? C’mon, just one more! OK, here’s what I like about it. It gimmicked Jokers and a regular deck. You can pull out a regular deck, do the effect, remove the jokers, and you are good to go with any routine with a regular deck of cards. In the credits you will see that this is similar to “The Monte” by Alan Rorrison. MonteZILLA is similar, but also quite different. BONUS IDEAS Super Duper Positive Negative Just in case there weren’t enough variations of Positive/Negative, here is one more. I really like this because it involves a really fun gimmick that isn’t too hard to make. I’m including this as a bonus because you will need make a gimmicked coin with a Dremel tool and a sharpening stone, and it will likely take at around 30 minutes to make. I realize that in today’s world of instant gratification, asking someone to spend 30 minutes making something is like asking for a lifetime. But, you end up with a really cool gimmick. Also, the effect works really well with a Quiver change pouch. If you don’t have one of these, and if you can afford it, I recommend getting one (or more). I have three. Business Card Quiver Piggy backing off the previous routine, if you do have a Quiver, then this is how I produce a business card in a magical way. Also, I’m going to share what I think is my “clever” business card idea with you. If you have signed up and didn't get it, PM me. If you haven't signed up and want to get it, PM me. KJ |

I started putting together next month's Journal. It has some really exciting things in it. I just want to highlight one:
BUCKET LIST I may be biased, but I think this is one of the best mentalism routines on a credit card size card in your wallet you can carry. It starts out as what you thought was your great Uncle's bucket list, only to discover that Uncle Ernie wasn't what people thought he was. By day he was the Janitor at a major University campus, but little did people know, he was a CIA agent and played a key role in WWII. Of course, this routine can be scripted many different ways, and I will go through my entire script which is very strong close-up magic for both casual performances and professional performances. I subscribed on Friday, read through the routines in the first two volumes. My initial impression is that this subscription looks to be a terrific value -- there is a lot of really good material and ideas here. I am looking forward to getting through vols 3 and 4.
Commonly known as Mariano Blanco.

OK, Volume 5 is going out today. Here is a preview of the routines:
BUCKET LIST This is a wallet effect that was inspired by some of the work of Outlaw Effects. I might be a bit biased, but I think this is one of the best mentalism routines you can carry in your wallet! You can do this in a casual setting or in a professional setting. You start by asking participant(s) if they believe in ESP. You then take out a small card that has “Bucket List” written on the top and a list of two dozen places and a few random odd words. You found this in your great Uncle’s stuff after the untimely death of your great Uncle and great Aunt on the same day. You later found out that your great Uncle worked for a major University, but also worked for the CIA. This card wasn’t a bucket list, it was a CIA ESP advanced training tool. With this card, CIA agents to be trained to transmit and receive ESP messages, top secret codes, and anything else they needed to. The card is very cleverly designed, and the script creates fascination and total belief in your participants. This routine helps you do what you should do in mentalism, and that is to completely engage an audience just as they would in a great movie. The method uses some very interesting concepts involving visual, smell, and taste Ambitious ACAAN There are many great Ambitious Card routines and great Any-Card-At-Any-Number (ACAAN) routines. I like this routine because it doesn’t require any gimmicks or special preparation. Also, I think the structure of the routine is worth checking out. Many ACAAN routines telegraph what is going to happen. “Name any card and any number…” Hmm, I wonder what is going to happen next? This routine condenses elements of the Ambitious card and then moves into the ACAAN in an unexpected way. GONE FISHIN’ This is a great routine for the entertainment value because it involves little paper fish. It can be performed in different ways, but one way involves you showing every fish has a different word written on it. You take out a fish shaped business card, secretly write a word that you think might be of particular importance to them and then they randomly “fish” a fish by pulling one of the many strings, each attached to a different fish. The word on their fish matches the word you wrote on your business card. They keep the business card to remind them of how they can apply this important word into their life. VOODOO QUEEN A great routine using a clever gimmick that allows you to make any card they select stand up in your hand. They hold the card, hand it to you, you make it stand in your hand, and then you immediately hand the card back to them for examination. BONUS GOLDFISH PRODUCTION I always wanted to do a goldfish production, but I didn’t want to actually bring a live goldfish to the event. So, this is a routine that combines magic with a bit of geek comedy, without the live goldfish. It is inspired by Mac King’s great goldfish routine. Think of it like Mac King Light. If you haven't subscribed and would like to, just send me a PM and you can get all five volumes for the same low price of $35. KJ |

I didn't space one correctly above. AMBITIOUS ACAAN is one of my favorites and it got lumped above. Here is a better list:

Volume 6 is out:
CLOSE-UP CONFAB This routine can be done on stage, parlor, or close-up. I call it Close-Up Confab because frequently confabulation routines are just for stage or parlor. This routine has some characteristics that make it very suitable for close-up. Also, it eliminates some of the serious problems with many confabulation routines. CIRCLE OF TRIANGLES The idea for this routine really came out of wanting to reveal a card in a mystical way. A GIFT FOR YOU AND A GIFT FOR ME A great drawing duplication or card revelation from a card enclosed in an envelope which is then enclosed inside another envelope. CHIP I love this one. It is so easy to do, funny, and engaging. The effect is a pringle chip comes out of a tiny folded envelope. A bonus followup coin routine from the same envelope. BONUS RABBIT OUT OF THE DECK To “pull a rabbit out of a top hat” is so synonymous with magic, it’s like the universal “logo” for magic. Most magicians don’t carry a rabbit around with them anymore, and even fewer wear top hats. However, the “rabbit out of the hat” is still an iconic thing when laypeople think of a magician. I always wanted to do something with a rabbit, so I came up with this. It is a modified version of the invisible deck, but with a rabbit that comes out of the deck. It is brilliant. But, don’t take my word for it, here is a quote: “This is so brilliant, I wish I had thought of it”. That’s my quote. I know, right? KJ |
