The effect Unshuffled is a stroke of genius, I have done the effect many times and it have been a success every time - over the years.
Now I´m waiting for the Kicker to arrive, it will be fun to learn this new ending.

Slyhand... to answer your question: Can the Kicker Gimmick Deck be handed out at the end of the trick. Technically the answer is NO. You cannot hand out the Kicker Deck immediately after the third phrase appears. I say "technically" because if you watched my appearance on Penn & Teller Fool Us that is what you saw me do. However I had the advantage of "Time Misdirection on the show and I anticipated the possible request to examine the deck. Remember I've been doing this trick for 40+ years and Penn & Teller were not the first audience members to make that request... I'm always ready for that request. It's only happens once a year at the most... but I'm ready. On the DVD I explain what I do to accomplish the ability to hand out the deck but it does involve some aspect of time misdirection, pocket management and acting to pull it off. Cleanly handing over the deck right after the final change is not possible. (However my son recently suggested a method for that which involves using the Kicker for the 2nd change and the doing the third change with only the deck... but that involves more handling and you still have the issue of the standard Unshuffled Deck revealing part of the secret. Remember with the Classic Version of Unshuffled handing out the deck is also impossible (unless the deck is switched on the off beat at the finish... something I do at time when necessary.

I have to admit I too was a bit surprised to see Unshuffled Kicker listed as a beginner trick, but those decisions are out of my hands as the creator. I think the Kicker is best used in combination with a Faro Shuffle and performing a perfect Faro is Advanced Technique.

I think what they were referring to when they said "Beginner" was the alternate handling I teach on the Kicker DVD which does NOT require a Faro. In this case you show a deck of cards with little black marks on the side of them. The spectator selects a card and returns it to the deck. The spectator can even shuffle the cards if they want to and the black marks on the side of the deck get even more mixed up. You take the deck back from them and have them hold out their hands, and you place the card box in their hand between their palms. You hold up the deck and ask what the name of their card was? They tell you Two of Spades. The black jumbled marks on the side of the deck slowly change to read TWO OF SPADES (Just like I did on Fool Us when it changed to read PENN & TELLER) You then tell them to shake the card box. They hear something inside and when they open the card box they find the selected card the two of spades. You are pocketing the deck & Kicker while they are discovering the Two of Spades inside the card box.

So you get the final impact of the little marks on the deck changing to the name of their card on the side of the deck (and the selected card ending inside the box) without a Faro. And yes that handling would qualify as "Beginner" because it does not require much technical skill (you just have to move your thumb up and down) and you are using the Kicker for a very strong effect with minimal skill, but you are not getting the full impact of the Classic Unshuffled Effect that you get with perfect Faro Shuffles. Hope this helps. Paul Gertner

Michael Murray sold a similar gimmick for a similar card routine a few years back.

Something for Nothing

Not sure how similar the gimmick is as Murray’s effect required a rubber band around the deck to start, which I don’t believe Paul’s does.

I’m thinking maybe Paul purchased the rights to this? Not much about this after 2013 or so and no longer available anywhere that I could find.

Thank you Mr J. I couldn’t get on with that gimmick at all. Would be interesting to know how similar they are?

Quote [ Just got a great e-mail from Paul Gertner who had the following to say:

"Very clever. You fooled me. The appearance of the name of the card looks great and is quite a surprise. Congratulations on a very nice handling of Unshuffled." ]

Worth watching the WPR. What I think Paul has done is made his ‘no skill’ version identical to Something for Nothing. It’s a great effect BUT you do have to ditch something which I found awkward. YMMV.

Got my Unshuffled Kicker today.

Not at all what I was expecting. I don't have Something for Nothing, so I can't say whether it uses the same method/gimmick. I highly doubt it does.

I'll say this - if you think you know how this is done, you're probably wrong. : )

Will I use this in my Unshuffled Routine? Honestly, I don't think I will. It's nice to have the option but I don't think it adds a lot to Unshuffled because Unshuffled is SO good in and of itself. It worked for Paul's Penn & Teller routine because it was so unexpected to them and added SOLELY to fool THEM.

But for laypeople who don't know about Unshuffled, once you reveal 1) the words "Unshuffled" and then 2) the name of their card, the reaction is so good revealing a 3rd message seems overkill (to me).

Does anyone who owns this feel like it is a practical walk around addition to the trick? Or more as a bonus head scratcher?
