Hi,
Just wondering why mentalists keep saying "I haven't influenced you in any way, is that correct?" when offering a choice to the participant, when that very premise can be used ( and indeed is used ) as an effect? Indeed spectators can justify or explain to themselves how the trick worked by "he must have influenced him to do so", when in fact that's a premise that a mentalist could be trying to sell in one of his other effects? That justification used to annoy me, till once in a close-up situation I followed it up with "That is actually correct, and I feel part of you is interested in how far this can be taken. The advertising industry is built on this, but I like to push the edge a little bit" and just swami a number from 1-1000. I had a great reaction. Granted stage is different and if one is not performing with a psychological character then I understand the reasoning of the question. I would love to hear your thoughts and ideas. |

If you could really influence someone to the degree some claim, wouldn't it be tempting to use that skill for everything?
So if you feel that might be boring, I guess it points towards a question of "in what way could I influence people in the biggest most impactful and entertaining way?" Maybe it's more about the strength of that ability too Once you start thinking about that kinda stuff, it gives you a wider scope to think about character wise... I kinda like the idea of someone being The Influencer...

From a theatrical perspective, its good to demonstrate how far you can take it ( even labeling as such in a performance context is effective, particularly with something quick like a swami revelation ). Its also an interesting avenue to explore how can this ability be used as in a card game or in establishing a connection with people, leading to a hypnotic routine. Another avenue is perhaps having the participant influence you, though I haven't translated that premise into an effective performance piece yet. I am reminded here of Ant Queen by Aaron Alexander. |

Depends on your age, you could do a smaller performance based around
This is when I first discovered icould influence someone as a kid This is how I used it as a teenager How I used it in my first job How I use it for good What I've learned about people and how my influence can be used for good and bad Then tie it in with the idea that we all try to manipulate things and situations, and what we can learn from it all

Or you can ask “are you aware of any effort on my part to influence you?” Leaves open your opportunity to claim subtle influence that isn’t noticed even when people are looking for it.
