What do you do when your beloved soft coins "harden up," start talking back and don't stick together like they should?
Here are a couple of things I've been doing that have been useful. 1.) Taking out a dent: All it takes is one drop for a dent to ruin a good coin. When this happens, I immediately use a second coin to push the dent back flat. I do this by stacking the second coin on top of the dented one, with it's rim just below the dented area. I hold both coins between the thumb and fingers, with the second coin topmost and under my thumb and with the dent at the 12 o'clock position (if I'm looking down at my palm up hand). I press hard and slide the edge of the second coin against the dent, flattening it back out. (Hint: if you can, use a coin you don't care about, like a clad coin). Eventually the second coin slides over the dent. You can put it back and repeat until the coins slide against each other with less (or hopefully no) resistance. If this works, the dent will be flattened (or flatter) but you'll still see the shape of that dent in the silver. 2.) Quick remedy for too many nicks and dents: I take a 7-Way Fingernail file you can get from a drug store and sand the coin down from the roughest side to the smoothest, concentrating on bumpy areas. Having 7 different levels of sandpaper allows you to use the grit that's best for the specific issue. It also allows you to get rid of the scratches, returning the coin to a more normal looking state. There are probably far better remedies out there and of course I'm always looking for ways to salvage a coin especially if it belongs to... say a... turtle's set (which I have no experiencing fixing but lets face it, I'll need to someday), so I'd love to hear what you guys do, too. |
