Can anyone provide info on where to obtain an effect where a plastic red arrow is balanced on the index finger. To further provide suspension proof, a belt is hung on the tip of the arrow and pressure is applied by pulling down on the belt. And yet, the arrow still remains perfectly balanced on the finger tip.
I saw this effect on tv by magician Joaquin Ayala many years ago. |

It's not necessarily an "arrow". I've seen a wooden "hook" that could be used. I've even used a ball point pen. The belt is place under the pocket clip. The belt is necessary to produce the EFFECT.
I don't remember the scientific principle. Someone here will know, I'm sure. The EFFECT is what the spectator PERCEIVES. --You cannot "obtain" it.

Yes. The 'gravity defying belt' has been in print numerous times. In the 1980s we used to sell them for 50 cents at the magic shop where I worked. It has been under a lot of names like 'Swami' belt suspension, belt balancer, and the impossible balancing hook.
It is a basic school science demonstration item like here: http://science-mattersblog.blogspot.com/......elt.html You can find them at many magic shops and kids science experiment outlets. Even specialty magic shops carry them: http://www.missionmagic.co.uk/prop-the-i......-message |

Just did a quick search. Most common name now appears to be the "devil's hook trick". For example:
http://www.icklepicklemagic.com/store/in......t_id=173 Or maybe we misunderstood and this isn't the effect Joaquin Ayala performed? |

FrankFindley, that's exactly the effect. For some reason though, I think Joaquin substituted a plastic red arrow for the hook. I could be wrong. At any rate, I am going to order myself one. Thank you so much for your help.

Reminds me of the coin and two forks on the edge of a glass.

------ I really didn't know how to explain it. So I told them the truth, and they fell for it! |

Thank you Frank! "Youse" done good! My ancient mind wasn't functioning. I remember selling them, also! I just couldn't recall the "name" of the prop.
I agree John. Those little "after dinner tricks" were in many magic books, years ago. Today, after dinner, everybody seems to be rushing off to ......!

Yes, I had a version of this from the novelty store as a youngster. It might have been an Adam's item.

Now they use the principle with plastic birds you balance on your finger.
